Guest guest
I agree with you. I can't understand why so many women let doctors convince them into having a hysterectomy. I personnaly would not consider a hysterectomy unless I had cancer. I had a myomectomy and I was very happy with the outcome. I still have my ovaries. I would get multiple opinions. Guest guest
Thank you Dora, I have been reading so much about fibroids and treatment methods, and I keep thinking to myself, right now, I'm not very symptomatic, but I don't want it to get to the point where it is. I haven't spoken to a doctor, but when I first was diagnosed by a PA, she said hysterectomy which scared me of course. Now the other thing that is scaring me is that it seems to me that not all doctors are capable of performing myo's, and that there is a possiblity of an emergency hysterectomy, should problems arise during one. I figure I have 10 years before I start menopause, give or take a few, so I'm thinking, maybe I should wait the fibroids out, see if they get worse. But if they get worse, doesn't one's options for treatment slowly start to shrink? God I'm confused! -Loly Re: Hysterectomy > Loly, > > You asked if anyone in the group has had a hysterectomy. Guest guest
Leonie and Sue Thank you for your responses and concern. This is what is going on ... I have had a couple of ultrasounds. I have had problems since my low 20's and was diagnosed at 25 ... I have " too many fibroids to count " the comparison was to a string of pearls (I kinda liked that). The largest one is only 4 cm. My uterus is the size of 13 months. I am not a candidate for myo and UAE due to the number of fibroids. I have heavy bleeding and severe cramping and I am very anemic (despite 3 iron pills a day)! Everything in my life is affected by this ... I can't work for 2-20 days a month ... I take too many pain pills to function at times ... and I lack the energy to walk up a flight of stairs, I am on Lupron AGAIN ... because it has been the only treatment that has helped me get my body back to functioning. This time I am also on very low does of HRT ... helps with the side effects but I have stared to bleed severely again. So what to do??? I am going to try to have a baby first then proceed with the hysterectomy unless something better comes along. I just need my life back. Guest guest
Just a thought. I would not rely on an " internal exam " to judge the growth of the fibroids. I also would recommend a MRI. The resolution on the MRI is far greater than the US.

Guest guest
Hi Lori, I also have a very large fibroid with equally enlarged uterus up to middle of navel (20 week size) and I have surgery for Supracervical Hysterectomy scheduled for March 12th. I have been told that because the uterus is so distorted and stretched that there is a very good possibility that the ovaries can not be saved. I am seeking a 2nd opinion from a Reproductive Specialist within that group for maybe changing over to myomectomy. I would prefer supracervical hysterectomy but not at the cost of losing ovaries. I am 42 would like menopause to happen naturally if possible! HRT seems to be a major problem for women. You may want to look into the likely hood of keeping your ovaries with large uterus! , sue Re: hysterectomy > > > > Question to anyone who has had a hysterectomy ... > what was your > experience? > > I will have to have one soon ... for fibroids. Guest guest
I think that Bonnie who had something like 40 fibroids removed in a myo - and larger ones than yours would disagree that you are not a candidate for myo. Also I thing that most IRs would disagree that multiple fibroids makes you a bad candidate for UAE, seeing as how one of the advantages of UAE is that it treats ALL the fibroids at one time, and as small as yours are it seems like you may have a better chance of them shrinking to a very small size. I think that your doctor's statements have more to do with his/her skill level than what is actually possible. --- KELPHUGER@... wrote: > Leonie and Sue > > Thank you for your responses and concern. Have you had MRI and or laporoscopy to get a clearer picture of your condition? UAE may indeed not be suitable; for instance some of your fibroids may have other blood supply besides uterine and ovarian arteries. And there could be problems if you do have adhesions to other organs. But I wouldn't take a gynaecologist's word for it; some have a very narrow view of what UAE is suitable for. Having a very large number of fibroids doesn't preclude UAE, but the size and position of your fibroids might may the procedure less advisable. Many of us (including me) know lots of women who express satisfaction with the results of their hysterectomies, but it's best to explore all options.
