Guest guest
If you have an open enrollment period at your job, get any insurance you can because individually you will never be able to buy insurance again. Most disability policies are similar. They will cover a certain percentage (normally around 60%) of your earnings. Again, get any insurance you can while you can. Even those policies on tv that say anyone can qualify, no tests, just answer three simple questions, you now flunk one of those. Find out if your life insurance at your company has a conversion privilege. If not, you can get small " burial " policies through companies like Peoples Benefit and Gerber. I'm only 37...ok, I lied....58. But, I felt more like 37 before this hit. As to losing your job, a lot depends on the type company you work for. You did just enter a protected group of Americans with Disabilities. Make sure you inform them of any reasonable accomodations you need. Insurance companies generally consider you able to work on oxygen in most jobs. However, if absenteeism and performance slip as they could, then your job does become jeopardized. One thing I did when I first became disabled for other reasons was plan all scenarios, including the worst case. At first the worst case seemed dismal until i realized how many others were living it and doing ok. It included government housing and lots of social services. I still have alternate plans based on what may happen to my income next August. If this is all hitting you hard and scaring you, get a counselor who can help you use your wise mind to work through it. It will be worth it to have someone as your situation changes. I know it sounds odd to be told this but " you're going to be ok. " I don't know how or what the future holds but if you can grasp that and believe it at some point then you'll be so much better off. Ok doesn't mean healthy or live till 100 or able to do anything you want or wealthy. It means live a meaningful life whatever the circumstances. > > I am not sure how old everyone is but it seems that every one is older > than I am accept for a few people. Guest guest
your wisdom comes through again Although I have insurance through my job and I am lucky I can work at home pretty any time I need to which I have used a lot lately and most of the companies I could work for I am entitled to work at home, not because of this but because we are software engineers and we usually work on computers and not people Meetings is the hard thing and its a good thing for conference calls. As far as getting insurance, believe it or not pre-existing conditions are covered under most insurances as long as you dont have a break in coverage, so I had RA when I went to this company 1 1/2 years ago and they covered it and now I am looking to go back to where I came from and I have to wait and see what the insurance policy is there because I have to have insurance. Also my husband just relisted back in the military so he can add me on there too if need be which we might do anyways. I wanted to get an aflac policy because I thought that would help but the guy hasnt re-turned my email after he first contacted me and I asked about pre-existing conditions. And theoretically I dont have anyhting yet no one has really diagnosed me with anything so what I have is RA No I am not in denial just beating them at their own game is all. I have life insurance and long term and short term disabilty and even accidential and dismemberment insurnace and most of the things I have payments are have insurnace as well the only thing I dont have that on is my house policy and my insurance policies would almost be enough to take care of that, so at least my family would have a place to live and not have to worry about anything. Do you still work ? I dont plan on not working matter of fact I am working on my Computer Forensics degree so I plan on moving up not out! I have to go to my next job so I will write later on... Guest guest
No, I haven't worked for two years for other medical reasons. Disability is the key. I would be extremely surprised if Aflac approved you for an individual policy, which is why I stressed the group policies. Even the RA would probably exclude you. Also, understand one thing and that is to not answer any question honestly on an application is the same as throwing your money in the fire, because they could care less while you're paying, but would check it out if you tried to collect. It's not preexisting conditions I'm referring to, its truthfulness in the application. Yes, as a software engineer you do have a significant advantage. You are correct on HIPAA making health insurance portable and eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions. However, it only applies to health insurance. It is never too early to check and see what is in your social security account either. You should get an annual report in October. If the time comes that you are disabled then you can continue insurance coverage for 18 months under COBRA. However, obtaining social security disability is tougher than private rules and you ultimately would need that unless insured under your spouse's policy so you would be eligible for medicare. Essentially all of us are now in a " Get as much insurance as you can afford " stage. One last insurance to mention is Long Term Care. Again, I think you would have a hard time getting an individual policy. However, at your age, if your employer offers such it should be reasonably priced, since your health will not factor into it. It would be especially worthwhile to have if the policy is convertible to an individual policy upon leaving which most Long Term Care policies are. I don't know how many out there are on medicare because of age or disability or facing it soon. One word of caution or awareness for any headed toward it because of disability. Medicare supplement plans for those under 65 are very slim and are generally extremely expensive. For instance, in Texas and my county only Policies A, B and F are offered and only two companies offer B and one offers F. Bankers Life offers plan B. If I were 65, it would cost $211 per month. At the age of 58, it costs $482 per month. So, Medicare Advantage Plans become the only reasonable option. > > > > > > I am not sure how old everyone is but it seems that every one is > > older > > > than I am accept for a few people. Guest guest
Speaking of life insurance. My policy I took out in the early 70's has a disability rider. Didn't remember this till my yearly statement last year. So called the company about it. Found out they would make my payments till i reach 65 YO, I am now 59. They also back dated the rider to my disability date and credited my cash value. Just thought this might help some of you to look into. I also have a small policy from my company i retired from. They offered it to any retiree with no questions asked so i jumped for it. The best thing about it is they will pay full value on it before you die, if your Doctor will state you have less than a year to live. So As I get closer to the bright light I will use this for my last expenses so the wife and kid don't have to make arrangement P PM (Polymositis) 12/98, UIP 8/00, o2 24/7 8/04, PH 3/06, ILL yo 59 __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Many policies other than the one you describe will also pay some in advance if you have a terminal illness although a lot of times its at quite a price. In fact, every life policy is always negotiable even if you aren't that close, if you're willing to accept less. One thing to watch is that if you are going to end up in a nursing home, the insurance over the cash value is protected. If you have substantial cash value you might even consider turning ownership over to the beneficiary and to make sure its legitimate have them make all future payments. > > Speaking of life insurance. Guest guest
I see what your saying! I am not sure if they offer long term care. isnt there one organization out there that offers all of this together? There has to be something for petes sake they have dog/cat insurance these days. I will have to do some serious digging. I wasnt stating I would dishonest on my application. As it wouldnt be because right now thats all I have is RA nobody else is saying anything so they can check it out all they want I would think. With my husband going back into the military and looking at rejoining full time they have supplement policies for health. With that even when he retires in 10 years he gets to keep his insurance. So that would be ok for health insurance. All this just makes me worried for when it does come to the point I cant work. Which we we all know that could be tomorrow or in 10, 20 years...Thats what bothers me I guess... Thanks for the wisdom again.... Guest guest
There are quite a few companies that offer most or all the products. However, even without diagnosis, your chances of getting approved with RA and with your current medical records are not good. While applying can't hurt and I'll be glad to point toward some, ultimately a group plan of some sort is your best hope. > > > > > > > > > > I am not sure how old everyone is but it seems that every one > > is > > > > older > > > > > than I am accept for a few people.
