A Palermo researcher, Quarantino, has discovered at the university of Southampton in the UK, a new road in research in self-immune diseases, and in particular, autoimmune thyroiditis (hashimot) which is the most frequent disease in the West and in Japan. The results are published in "Nature Medicine". In particular, the group led by the Italian researcher, has cloned a gene, the T cellular receptor, TCR of white blood cells of a woman with thyroid problems and it was inserted in the genome of a mouse which spontaneously developed autoimmune thyroiditis like men and with the same symptoms of obesity and metabolic dysfunctions. It is now possible to understand how the disease begins and follow it in its course to bloc it or prevent it and therefore develop ad hoc drugs. (AGI) 031845 SET 04 COPYRIGHTS 2002-2003 AGI S.p.A.
