Hello wpurser@...,

In reference to your comment:

Your wt loss, can put your diabetes into a kindof remission...

You may be able to tolerate more carbs, and not need any medications...

You may have " normal " hba1c's, but i bet if you ate a high carb meal, and

tested at 1 hr and 2 hrs, you would see a peak that would be WAY higher than

a normal non diabetic peak...

Perhaps you need to do this, and bring your readings to the dr.

Also if you change your way of eating your wt will probably go back up....

It is true that wt loss often is enough to reverse the symptoms of diabetes,

but this does not mean the problem is cured.

Janet,

I'm so sorry you had this experience. Rick made a good suggestion about

getting a GTT, but your dr may refuse to order it. Has your dr seen your

records when you haven't followed your current lifestyle? I'm not telling you

to go out and eat something that would raise your bgs before a dr's appt, but

if the dr refuses a GTT, it could be one way to make your point.

I was dxed early and lost about the same amount of weight as you did. When my

dr saw my bg records, he cheered but then cautioned me NOT to think I was

cured. I assured him that I knew just what to eat to make my bgs rise.

BTW...today is the 3rd anniversary of my dm dx.

Janet, my strong advice to you is get another doctor. Any doctor who would

tell you that your diabetes is gone just because you've achieved non-diabetic

numbers (and this with great effort) is, at the worst, a very bad doctor, at

best uneducated. I think his advice to you is outrageous, not to mention a

danger to you and others, if this is what he tells other diabetics. (Or maybe

he hasn't ever seen a motivated diabetic before and therefore doesn't know

what to do with you).

You're absolutely correct in your belief that once you have diabetes, it is

yours forever, alas.

You've worked very hard to get good numbers by losing weight, watching your

diet carefully and reducing your carb intake. If your diabetes were truly

" gone " , you could eat whatever you wanted and your BGs wouldn't budge.

Don't lose heart...just stick with your guns. And get another doc. And if I

were you, I'd write a letter to your local medical society too, complaining

about him.

Hi Carolyn and All, you avoid all the complications if you are lucky,

apparently. I have been treating my diabetes for 14 years. In the first 10

yrs, my HbA1c was never above 6.0 and in the last 4 yrs, it has not exceeded

5.8. Nevertheless, I have macular edema and retinopathy, both progressing

slowly and steadily. I'm having another angiogram next week and will be

visited by the laser shortly thereafter.

Oh, by the way, I didn't mean to put down the shit shovelers of the world.

If I were you, I would find a different doctor. One that understands that

diabetes is a lifelong disease, that with proper control can show " normal "

BG readings. And, just because you are in control doesn't mean that you are

cured, just doing the right things for your body and that you still need to

keep on testing to make sure you stay in control.

RE: HELP, please

Well, with that mentallity, I think your doctor should immediately quit

practicing medicine and go shovel shit for a living. It is great that you

got your numbers in control, and keep doing what your doing. Unfortunately,

if you don't, your doctor will have to tell you that you got it again! :)

Congratulations. I do believe the doctor. You are cured for right now.

There is scientific evidence that with weight loss your pancreas can

repair itself.

Now I also believe that if you go back to the way you were before, it

can come on again very quickly.

So, accept the good new, jump up and down, scream hooray fromt he

rooftop.

Now decide how you will eat the rest of your life to never have this

happen again. You will always be close to diabetic.

But, I am so, so , so , so happy for you.

Send us all the details of everything you did! You are a succes story. I

read about people like you on Atkins all the time. They are reversing

heart disease and diabetes.

Hi Janet,

I'm so sorry that you have had this experience. I read your 2nd post as

well before i had a chance to respond to this one. In that post you

mentioned that when you eat out your numbers go way up.

I don't believe that you are " cured " in an absolute sense. The

underlying metabolic conditions that caused your blood sugar to go high

in the 1st place still exist. You have done an excellent job by losing

80 lbs! Congratulations! This will make a significant difference in your

insulin sensitivity. However, it does not mean that you are no longer

insulin resistant. In my opinion, you are now a very well controlled

diabetic individual. And, if you keep doing what you are doing, you may

be fortunate enough to remain that way for the rest of your life. If I

were you, I would go to the doctor and insist that he do a Glucose

Tolerance Test. This would show him what you said in your 2nd post about

your numbers going up when you eat out. If your numbers go up

significantly when you eat out, I am certain that a GTT would raise your

numbers as well. This would point out that the good numbers that you are

seeing on a consistent basis are a result of you " treating " your

condition properly. It would also point out that the underlying

condition still exists. Please let us know what happens if you decide to

do this.

I know people that have had similar results. Get tight control and what appears

to be " cured " will change how the insurance company looks at covering your

needs. The sad part is that you may have to pay for test strips on your own to

be sure you maintain that control. The great part is that as long as you remain

in control you avoid all the other complications that come with being a

diabetic. If you are able to maintain your control with minimal testing for at

least a year then consider yourself blessed.

Hi, Virginia...I don't want to sound like a Pollyanna...but maybe without the

good control you would have gotten those complications a lot earlier, who

knows.

Did your ophthalmologist say that it was diabetic retinopathy? Because I

know for certain that macular degeneration isn't a diabetic-related

condition, more related to age. (My brother has it but he's not diabetic).

And retinopathy can have other causes too, I think. Vicki

I have never had an insurance company (mostly Blue Cross & Bluecare) that would

cover strips for testing diabetic or not unless we were on Insulin.
