PREGNANCY AFTER MYOMECTOMY

Hi,

I had a myomectomy in June of 93' and the Dr. advised us to wait until Sept.

to start trying to get pregnant. I got pregnant immediately and delivered a

healthy baby girl 1 year to the date of my myo. The pregnancy was uneventful

considering my first one was plagued with high blood pressure and toxemia. I

had to have a c-section due to the fact that it was so soon after the myo

but it was no big deal. Good luck!

Thank you for the good news. So you waited about 4

months and that is right where I will be when I start

trying. I am going to see my Dr. next week just to go

over some things w/ him. My incision healed great

and I am really not worried but I just didn't want to

worry my entire pregnancy about the previous incision.

Thanks again for your reply.

Hi Kristi,

I had a myo in June 2000 and was told to start trying in November. To be honest

I didn't really try, I just didn't use any protection and got pregnant in March

2001. I had a baby girl in Dec 2001. So I wouldn't say it was difficult

getting pregnant. The pregnancy went okay, had some pain because one of the

fibroids that wasn't taken out started growing really fast during the pregnancy

and actually blocked the entry to my cervix and I had to have a c-section. Other

than that she is a healthy baby.

Hope this helps.

February or March of this year before we starting trying for a baby.

It seems kind of soon to me but I am anxious to start trying. Can

anybody tell me how long they waited after myo to get pregnant?

Also, how was the pregnancy and delivery.

Thanks much!!

Hi Beri:

Thanks so much for the information. I (as far as I

know) don't have any more fibroids. I had one BIG one

removed in November and that was all the Dr. saw when

he went in. That is my plan as well to just not use

any protection and when it happens it happens. So it

took you about 5 months to get pregnant. I was

figuring the average is like 6 mos. I will just be

glad to know I can get pregnant and carry a baby. My

fibroid was right on top of my fundus and off to the

side by my left tube. I am worried that one may still

be blocked from the surgery but as long as I have one

good one... that works for me! Thanks again for your

reply.

Hi Kristi,

I am in the same vote as you. I had my myo done on November

16th,2001. My doctor told me before my surgery that I will have to

wait before trying between 6 months to a year after the surgery. I

don't know if it is because the fibroid I had was huge and the

location of it. The fibroid itself weighed over 8 pounds. I am also

wondering when I do get pregnant if my pregnancy will be classified

as high risk.

Hello Everybody!! I had a large 11cm fibroid removed in Nov 2001. I

have NOW gotten pregnant as of March 2002. My husband & I are very

excited and happy as can be!!

I am just wondering if anybody has gotten pregnant so soon after MYO

and if so, did you notice that your belly seemed to get bigger right

away. I was trying to figure out how I could only be about 4 weeks

prego and feel so huge and bloated. Then I read how if you've already

had one baby, your uterus tends to get bigger faster w/ the 2nd

pregnancy. I am wondering if that is what is happening to my belly

even though this is my first baby... my uterus thinks it's my 2nd

pregnancy. I had 16-20 week pregnancy belly w/ the fibroid!!?!?!

If anybody has any input at all, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!!! Hope everyone is doing well!!

Hi Kristi,

Congratulations!

I can only answer the first part of your question. I too got pregnant

3.5 months after myo. Unfortunately miscarried at 6 weeks so don't know

much about how big the belly got. My fibroids were small so I didn't

have much, if any, uterine stretching from them.

Do you know why you miscarried? Did they tell if you if it had anything to do

w/ the myomectomy? My fibroid was in the wall and did not eface the uterine

lining so my endometrium is just fine. I had a 16-20 uterus w/ the fibroid so

your situation is not really the same at all.

Thanks!

Hi Beri:

Thank you. Well I am really glad that it didn't take me long to get pregnant.

I probably would have been discouraged quickly. I really thought my one tube

might have been blocked because the fibroid was right on top of it practically.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you deliver your baby? I have been told I

will need a c-section because of the incision. I thought I seemed to get

bigger faster. Plus I have never felt like my stomach has completely gone down

since my surgery last November. I used to have a flat stomach and so it's

noticable to me. Oh well. At least I am rid of the fibroid!!!!

Yes as far as I know I only had the one fibroid and that was it. The dr. only

saw the one big one. SO I hope it's smooth sailing like you said.

Thanks for the info. You've made me feel much better!!

" normal " pregnancies. Mine was because I knew I had at least one fibroid left

after the surgery and they tend to grow with pregnancy due to the huge amount of

estrogen produced during pregnancy. Also, your uterus was probably still to

some extent larger than normal from the fibroid and takes a longer time to

shrink after a myo than it will after pregnancy.

Everything will be fine. My gyna. told me that after a myo. the difficult thing

is actually getting pregnant, once you are pregnant you more or less become like

other pregnancies. If you haven't got any more fibroids then it is smooth

sailing.

All the best

My surgeon told me, even before surgery, and certainly afterwards, that

I will have to have c-sections when I get pregnant. I know that the

concern is with the uterus rupturing, presumably during labour.

Rhonda,

Thanks for your reply. I had to loose two pregnancies prior to finding out

that I have this fibroid. I am sorry to hear of your loss, and I hope you

will be able to do what you need to do to get rid of the fibroids. My doctor

is very optimistic about my husband and I being able to have a baby. My

fibroid is small, about the size of the end of your finger. I, like you,

just want it out. My doctor tells me that more than likely another one will

grow back eventually, but if I am lucky I will have all of the children that

I want by then. I wish you luck in the future. If you need to talk I am

here for you. I know what it is like to go through the mourning process.

You will never get over your loss, you will just move on. My first due date

is in June, so needless to say I am starting to feel depressed. I hope we

can continue to talk, and if you need anyone to talk to feel free to talk to

me.

Apologies if this is the second posting of a similar reply. Somehow

lost the first draft...

Hi Dana. I am in a very similar situation. Two weeks ago today, I

lost my first pregnancy at 22 weeks due to a 9-10 cm fibroid (I have

three total). Needless to say, my husband and I are devestated. The

grieving/recovery process is a moment-by-moment thing. Fortunately,

we are blessed with and incredibly supportive circle of family and

friends.

I did not even know I had the fibroid until after I was pregnant. It

was discovered by ultrasound after I experienced some bleeding. I

was six weeks pregnant at the time.

Right now, I am doing a lot of research and have the same question as

you. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about trying again. The

thought of again experiencing the pain I am currently feeling is

terrifying. But the truth is, my husband and I have always wanted a

family and would love to be able to conceive. So, I am going to

focus first on healing (physically, mentally, spiritually) while

remaining optimistic.

I am currently waiting to hear from my OB to find out more about my

fibroid, specifically location/type. I had a brief consultation

w/another OB in the practice who recommended a myoectomy and was

very, very optimistic about future pregnancies, provided we remove

the trouble fibroid. We are planning to sit down in about another 4

weeks to ultrasound the fibroids and talk more in-depth about my

options. Regardless, I want the fibroids out! I have also scheduled

a second opinion consultation w/a Boston area Dr. recommended by a

few women from this site--Dr. Levine. Like I said, I am

going to remain optimistic and will do the same for you.

I wish you the best for your upcoming surgery and future!

Dear Rhonda,

I am sorry about your loss. LIke you, I didn't know I had a fibroid

until after I concieved. It was discovered at around 18 weeks when I

was in severe pain. At that time, the doctors told me all kinds of

negative things that could happen with the pregnancy. Fortunately

for me, I was able to vaginally deliver a healthy baby boy. Now the

doctors want to remove the fibroid, but I'm not sure I want to risk

scarring the uterus and not being able to conceive again. Even

though my pregnancy was filled with a LOT of pain, I have a healthy

baby and I know I want more children. I wish you the best in your

decision making.
