Guest guest
Rosemary - I have reacted to gadolinium last time (Oct 2000) My doctor said he hates not to use it because it is so beneficial. I tried to talk him out of it. But next year I will be given Prednison 12 hours in advance of the MRI. So, if we do react, there are precautions that can be taken. The first 13 years of my MRI life I never reacted to it. My body chemistry keeps changing. I have had similar experiences with other drugs. I can take them one month - six months later I reacted. The gadolinium is used in about (seemingly) the last ten minutes of my MRI scans. Guest guest
Rosemary: I don't know anything about the spinal tumors, but I do know that there are different MRI machines. My doctor in Seattle always has me get mine up there instead of here in Olympia because it shows more -- and they've even upgraded the MRI here in Olympia, so I'd say there definitely is different " strengths " of the machines. Guest guest
Rosemary, I recently had a full body MRI, I get them once a year and my neuro has had no problem keeping track of tumors present or not. I had three tumors removed from the spine, one in each portion, and so far, the spine is clean and m neruo has been able to keep a close watch to anything new that should grow there. WIth contrast, half way through the MRI, that helps to increase the ability to spot the tumor and according to the radiology reports, they are able to monitor the size of the existing tumors and to gauge the growth in mm's from scan to scan. I'm sure MRI's are perhaps different in ways when it comes to calibration and the best thing I could think of would be to contact Radiology at the hosp she'll be having the MRI for their assessment of what the MRI will and will not pick up. Just my thoughts-- Greg > DEAR CREW,>> Louis is due to have MRi's in two weeks to check that both meningiomasare> completely excised, and he is also due to have a spinal mri .>> Now is there a "definitive" approach to cervical, thoracic and lumbarmri's,> like there is for vestibular schwannomas??>> Do they have to be done in small sections like 3mm?>> I understand that they can miss small tumors, so I'm wondering howdetailed> they make these mri's?>> rosemary>>>>

Guest guest
Jane, I also have had trouble with gadolium and nauseous results that eventually led to very violent projectile vomiting, hey no one would listen to my protests of being very nauseous. Anyway, before that I had been sitting up for the gadolium and told them this was far better, also the gad was delivered much slower. They wouldn't have anything to do with this, they did not want me to sit, I was already out of the machine, of course, they had their reasons, but the result was all over the room, them,me, the MRI unit and my husband who had been leaning over me trying to calm me. I couldn't help it, I had to laugh, they were covered. ( I was releasing tension as well I would guess). Anyway, the last 3 times now we have done the mri's slow and with me in a sitting position during injection of gadolium and this has really helped me during and after the MRI. Guest guest
Hi , 3 hours !!!!! Only spinal or brain as well? Was this his first spinal? Do you know the size sections they used? It is the distance between each round of jack hammers. This is the all important question. Sometimes you can tell from hard copies. If you don't know perhaps you could tell me where you had this MRi and I could ask them what their desired specifications are....Greg suggested contacting Rad and asking them, the problem in Aus. is I have to tell them!!!! rosemary. on 14/1/01 3:40 AM, Hollis at northwood1mom@... wrote: > >> DEAR CREW, >> >> Louis is due to have MRi's in two weeks to check that both > meningiomas are >> completely excised, and he is also due to have a spinal mri . >> >> Now is there a " definitive " approach to cervical, thoracic and > lumbar mri's, >> like there is for vestibular schwannomas?? >> >> Do they have to be done in small sections like 3mm? >> >> I understand that they can miss small tumors, so I'm wondering how > detailed >> they make these mri's? >> >> rosemary My son just had what they called full spinal mri, it > took about 3 hours and I think it was divided in the three sections > you mentioned. Guest guest
Hi Rosemary- I also have a full spinal every year- it takes about 3 hours, maybe 2 and a half. I have one next Saturday! This is seperate from the brain scan I have every 3-6 months they cant do them together bec it would take too long. Guest guest
Hi Jayne, (am I right?) Thanks for answering. It seems 3 hours is the go for the definitive spinal. BUT Do you know how big the sections are eg. normal mris are done in about 5mm sections, and vestibular mri's are done in 3mm.....I need to know this because otherwise I am just going to be saying I need a mri that lasts about 3hours. It is not that easy in Australia, you are often dealing with technicians/specialists who have never even heard of nf2. Louis had a " full spinal " to rule out spinal tumors 6 months ago. It took all of 20 minutes without contrast. Now you see my problem. wondering if anyone has the technical specifics out there? rosemary. on 14/1/01 12:22 PM, JAJ521@... at JAJ521@... wrote: > Hi Rosemary- > I also have a full spinal every year- it takes about 3 hours, maybe 2 > and a half. Guest guest
I wonder if maybe it shouldn't take quite as long (3 hours) in children because they are smaller. Not as much area to cover as in an adult. I don't think it took Nick 3 hours, though we were there a long time by the time they got an IV in him, sedated him, etc. Then he woke up halfway through and sat up because he needed more sedation.
