Guest guest
Hi Rosemary - I would like to respond to your fury over being told to learn sign language. First, since no one can even guess how NF2 will affect each and every one of us who have it I believe the doctors did a good thing for you suggesting you all learn sign language. There are many reasons for this in my line of thinking. I am deaf from NF2. I am 48 years old (this Saturday). In 1986 I was told to learn sign language that I would some day be totally deaf. I didn't immediately run out and do that - learn sign. I denied that I was going deaf totally until 1992 when I had my first major hearing decrease. I started studying it at that time. Because of life flows I took sign on and off for the next 4 years. I would have studied it more intensely and regularly but I had a granddaughter to raise, a father dying and a best friend dying in those four years. I didn't have time to study it to the degree I desired to know it. From personal experience it is much easier to learn sign language when you are a hearing person. Also, from being around adults and children (including my grandchildren) the children pick it up much faster. I would suggest, along with your doctor, to learn sign language. If the best news comes that your son will never lose his hearing he will still have the skill of signing and be able to communicate with all of us who depend on sign language to lessen the burden of our lives to feel included. God bless. Jane
