Guest guest
Jodi, you are one of a very small percentage who would end up with tests like this. A Free T3 in the high end of the range but free T4 at the bottom end. That was excellent the doc gave all the right tests, but your doc is missing what looks to me to be the begining stage of hyperthyroid. The TSH goes up causing more T4 to be converted to T3 so the T4 goes down and T3 goes up. This usually happens because of a TSH secreting pituitary tumor. I highly suggest you find an osteopath quickly and have him send you out for an MRI. They would be mostly like to be open to what I say as most docs just look to see if you are " in range " . Do you have symptoms that seem match with hypo or hyper? Hyperthyroid does not cause an elevated temperature. You feel hotter, you pump out more heat.. but you don't run a fever.... Guest guest
Jodi, Please remember, that what might be " normal " is not normal for you!You still haave the goiter AND symptoms. Your Free Thyroxine is lower than what might be good for you! That should be in the upper quarter(or at least half) of the range. What are your vitals? Is your pulse slow?(less than 70 in non-athletes)?Your bp?is your temp below normal?respirations? What other symptoms do you have that is bothersome to you? A goiter is a problem! --It is not normal to have one.I suggest going doctor hunting.... Keep asking questions, we will help you through this....... Hugs Feisty I'm afraid my thyroid levels are normal > Hi, everyone, > > I'm so depressed - I've been avoiding this - I got my lab results 2 > weeks ago and everything falls within the range of normal. Guest guest
A goiter is an enlarged thyroid, there are several causes. Insufficient Iodine. Attack by antibodies causing poor production and failing organ so it enlarges to compensate. Genetic defects, I'm not familiar with all of them, only mine. I have bad TSH receptors so my gland had no guidance. I was low grade hyper for years and then the gland decided that it should put out even more and that is when I went into storm. When I was diagnosed and they did the scan I had a healthy happy gland that was twice normal size, the size it became as it enlarged to increase production. Bad signals from the pituitary or hypothalamus causing the gland to increase in size to increase production. Now, Hashi's experts!!! Is it possible that the tests were run when it just happened that the antibodies were low?? Also, antibodies can also screw lab results, correct? Have you tracked your basals? Are you showing any signs of being hyper? That would be an increased heart rate and breathing? Have they done any scans? Tell us about your symptoms.... If you are not feeling well... lets see if we can figure out why. Low grade hyper symptoms is what I'm curious about..... Do you feel warm when others around you are not? Or have others said that you feel warm? Has your appetite increased? Thirst? Do you need to go to the bathroom more often, and 'need' to because you've been eating and drinking more? Have you noticed any muscle twitching or started having problems with tendonitis? Do you feel restless/nervous a lot? Have trouble staying focused or your mind 'races'? Do you have trouble sleeping? Or staying asleep? How are your periods, have they shortened or stopped? No you ever have tongue cramps? Do your teeth ever chatter even when you aren't cold? (Mine would chatter when I was nervous) Ever get feelings of paranoia? Those are what comes to mind right now. The list is longer. I'm sure that you've read a lot of the hypo symptoms, but we don't often talk about the hyper.... I'm wondering if there are any pituitary issues. You may be swinging into a hyper phase...but aren't quite 'there' yet. The question is - why? Guest guest
I wouldn't give up on your doc unless you already told him you symptoms, doing so might open his eyes. Remember to that HYPER is at least 10 times less common than HYPO so your doc does not get to see this as often. It looks like you are in the beginning stages and the cause might be elusive as yet. If small enough a tumor might not show on the first MRI. If caused by antibodies they might not show up yet. So be prepared that might take a while to get this all figured out. Your best chance is an osteopath I believe. I don't here very often that one had to find another. Hang in there and please keep us updated. Guest guest
If your thyroid receptors (which sit at the site of your cells, each of them) are being insensitive to thyroid hormone, or are turning it away in favor of something else, then the blood levels aren't going to mean anything. Are you eating soy? Do you have insuling resistance? There are so many factors here. The thyroid swelling to make hormone is not normal by any standards, and your doc doesn't seem to understand this. Let her/him go around with a swollen thyroid, and I could bet that something would be done but fast! The thyroid swells larger in order to trap more iodine for usage, which means to me that something's going on there. I don't seem to remember, did you say that you had had a thyroid scan or not? If not, you need it, you may have a nodule in there. An autonomously functioning nodule can produce part of your T3 in the blood, giving a false picture. I'm afraid my thyroid levels are normal > Hi, everyone, > > I'm so depressed - I've been avoiding this - I got my lab results 2 > weeks ago and everything falls within the range of normal. Guest guest
Hi, , Thanks for this information I'm glad you guys want to help me figure out what is wrong - the doctors certainly don't. I've seen 2 doctors in the past 2 months. Neither think the goiter is a problem. I had a sonogram a few years ago when my endo first felt a lump. Then I was diagnosed with the goiter, and he just wanted to watch it. I couldn't feel or see it, so I didn't worry about it either. But for the past year, it's been growing - I can feel it and see it in the mirror Resting heart rate is 64 and respirations are 16. I'll start taking my temp in the morning. Jodi > A goiter is an enlarged thyroid, there are several causes. > Insufficient Iodine. > Attack by antibodies causing poor production and failing organ so it > enlarges to compensate. > Genetic defects, I'm not familiar with all of them, only mine. Guest guest
Thank you for writing that . Jodi, you are only 2 weeks ahead of me. GP said my thyroid was swollen on Tuesday and with a TSH of 1.05, I was told I did not have a problem. I found a doc that would help and she has this big nutritional practise that doesn't take insurance and the first visit is $300plus, other docs from the Armour website were either not taking new patients or just said so once I mentioned the Armour website! Presto - chango, now I have an appt with an endocronologist that is in my plan. My guess/fear is that I will have to convince the endo to run the other tests. These test names listed below, is this is what is run when a "full panel" is requested? Isn't there a test for the Free T4? Is one of these tests the "thyroid antibody" test? I am reading so much I am getting myself all confused! Did you have to ask for each test by name? Guest guest
Oh, the Thyroxine is the T4 free. I see Debbie's answer to ask for the T3 and T4 seperately - Thanks Debbie! I see 's answer that Free T3 is also called Triiodothyronine thanks !) I am looking if there are other names for the T3 uptake. From : (Thanks !) What you need to do is request the following tests: TSH Free T4 Free T3 antithyroglobulin and antithyroidperoxidaseFerritin Are these two the name of the antibody test I need to worry about because I have had 2 miscarraiges? Thank you for being patient with me as I sort this out. I have ordered one of the recommended books.
