Guest guest
Well Sandy I've had apsces all my life since I was a teenager and my doctor thinks I've been diabetic since then. Just one that slipped through the net. Unfortuneately I've now got a damaged liver and various other problems with heart but, nothing I can do about that. I do find the low carb WOL is helping a great deal though. How about you? Ruth

Guest guest
Type 1 is autoimmune induced. If you have a pre-existing autoimmune condition, a viral illness -- or trauma, such as an accident -- can trigger the diabetes. I had hypothyroidism for 30 years and Sjogren's (both endocrine/autoimmune related) at least 12 years prior to my diabetes diagnosis. And I had a viral illness immediately before my type 1 diagnosis. And Scarletina is, as you mentioned, viral. Right now, the only other autoimmune conditions I can think of is lupus. But there are many others. Vicki << Did your doctor give you any insight as to why you might have developed it, Ruth? I know the doctor told my sister that a very severe virus -- like her Scarletina -- could cause it. >>

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Type 2, as I'm hypothyroid and have been for 25 years... I had to have a tumor removed from the thyroid gland, and it was pretty much useless, so I have to take Synthroid. Sandy

Sounds like between the autoimmune diseases and the viral illness, you got a double whammy, Vicki. Me too, I guess... I didn't know about the autoimmune connection. Guest guest
I've been taking Synthroid for 30+ years. Are you sure you're type 2? Are you overweight? Insulin resistant? What pills are you taking and are they working? How long since your diagnosis? << I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Type 2, as I'm hypothyroid and have been for 25 years... Guest guest
Yup...double whammy.. There's absolutely no diabetes of any type in my family. (Or any thyroid disease, either.) The diabetes diagnosis came out of left field, for sure. Total shock and surprise. I always thought that having thyroid deficiency was so cool...a major problem cured with one simple pill a day. Little did I know that it was a precursor to diabetes.... Vicki << I had a viral illness immediately before my type 1 diagnosis. And Scarletina is, as you mentioned, viral.
