I had my MRI last night and asked the technician to see the films. Although she

told me that she could not interpret them, I could see that this is one huge

mass. The trouble is that I've been experiencing difficulty keeping my food

down these last few days. It's now past 3:30 a.m. my abdomen feels tight and is

distended. I can't sleep. I keep bringing up bile, gagging and throwing up.

I'm guessing that the fibroid is pressing against my digestive system or

something. My Reproductive Endocrinologist is supposed to be gone on vacation

these next few days. When he saw me on Saturday the symptoms were no where near

as acute. He recommended a hysterectomy at the time. I desperately want to

save my uterus. My symptoms however are beginning to alarm me. I live in the

Western Massachusetts area. Please advise!

Dear Irene,

Forgive me if you've already told us, I just can't remember...please tell us

more about your condition. Where and how large is/are your fibroid(s)?

Hang in there!

Irene:

Try to stay calm. I once got very nervous about two things that happened

very close together. Well, I didn't realize how nervous I was getting. The

first symptom I noticed was that I could try to clear my throat, but it

wouldn't clear. Then, I got this tremendous itching all over my body. I

ended up in the emergency room because it was a weekend. But I was kind of

scared. They told me it could have been food allergies. When I asked about

stress, they said that stress could cause a reaction like that too. Also, my

fingers got swollen. It was very strange.

Try to stay calm. And I hope you get the health care you need.

while you are waiting to see dr if digestive probs continue you could pick up

antireflux OTC meds like tums, or ask your family dr to prescribe antireflux

meds like zantac------------this will cut down on acid production--------may

help while you wait this out

Dear Irene,

Are you by chance constipated as well?

Is it possible that the mass contains a collection of blood? My gyn explained

to me that blood can sometimes collect around the fibroids in the uterus.

That was one of my problems before UAE. It caused my uterus to expand. I had

to have a couple d & c's to remove the collection of old blood. It helped the

problem for awhile. Ask your doctor if this is a possibility with your

current situation.

Please let us know how you progress.

Anne,

My doctor is Dr. Howe. His office is in East Longmeadow. He is a

Reproductive Endocrinologist. I first saw him a week ago Friday to discuss the

possibility of a future pregnancy. I'm 45 years old. I have a 3 1/2 year old

son but would like another child. After my meeting with him on Friday I was so

optimistic. We were going to try Clomid to stimulate eggs. He asked me to come

in on Saturday to check out the small fibroid I had mentioned. Neither he nor I

were prepared for what he found. This was no longer a small fibroid. It was so

large that he could not see behind it which is why he ordered an MRI. I think

that my response (throwing up, nausea, etc). was probably anxiety induced. I

couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the MRI. The technician let me see it. It

looked like a large shopping bag in there. And, of course, at a size of 21 week

pregnancy, no wonder I can't get pregnant. There's no place in there for a

fetus!

My experience with Baystate Hospital has not been all that rosy. A year ago

February, I went to the emergency room because I was miscarrying and thought

that perhaps they could help me " save " the fetus. The treatment I got there was

unbelievably poor. A young male intern was assigned to my case. First of all,

he couldn't believe that I was pregnant at my age (then 44). He treated me as

if I was making it up. He wanted to check to see if I had forgotten a tampon in

there or some other such nonsense. He asked me how I knew I was pregnant. I

told him that I had taken a home pregnancy test and that it was positive. He

told me that they were not 100% accurate. I explained to him about how the test

works-detecting HCG levels which are only evident when one is pregnant etc. He

still wasn't convinced. I told him that in fact, I had done two pregnancy tests

that were positive. Then when I told him that I had a son who was over 12

pounds at birth he was even more incredulous. He asked if I had him naturally

or C-section. I told him the latter and then he asked to see my scar! The final

insult was when he suggested that I be seen by the psychiatric people. I asked

that I have another doctor assigned on the case. I later found out that he

wrote on my chart that I was being hostile to treatment.

The other doctor was more mature. He agreed to allow me to have an ultrasound

and there, for my very own eyes I could see what was left of the fetus. It was

very therapeutic because it confirmed what I had already known. That is, I was

pregnant and miscarrying. This wasn't something some hysterical 44 year old

woman was making up! Anyway, that's my story about Baystate. I was told later

on that I should have gone to Wesson Women's because they have a more

knowledgeable staff there in terms of women's issues.

I made an appt. for next Friday with Dr. Levine in Boston. I want him to look

at the fibroids and do a myomectomy if he agrees.

What's your story?

I'm doing better now. Thanks. Irene
