I am curious. Is there anybody like my husband who was slender when they got

diabetes?? How many of us are there?? And do we have anything in common??

Here's my husband Monte's stats: He was 59 years old, 6', 180 when he was

diagnosed. His mother and sister have it. Both of them got it around the

same age. Sister is obese; mother was not. His diabetes is greatly helped

with Metformin, so he's a Type II for sure, I believe.

Anybody else??

Janie,

When I got diabetes I weighed 193 lbs. and was 35 years old. 2 days

before Thanksgiving. Made that holiday memorable. Anyway my weight shot up

to 268 lbs. before we found the correct exercise regimen, medicine and

diabetic diet that worked for me. My weight is now 232 lbs. and am

heading back down. I'm working to get back to between 180 and 195 pounds.

If it matters, I'm male and 6'4 " .

I suspect that whether or not you need medication depends on each person's

system. Diet may only be one factor. My systems seems to be able to handle

more carbs than many diabetics. I have listed my meal plan below, but we all

have to learn through testing what works best for each of us. I would suggest

that if your bgs readings are outside the 90 to 125 range you might want to

start with fewer carbs than my plan.

My meal plan is for 1,500 to 1,800 calories and 125 - 160 carbs a day. I am

5'10 " and weigh 145-155, type 2, no meds. My target range is 90(/18=5) to

125(9/18=7). I test 5 times a day. I try to vary my meal plan as much as

possible and always look for new products.

Typical Day:

8:00 I can of Ensure, 230 calories, 40carbs.

10:00 1 small banana or 1/2 a large banana, 50-75 calories, 20-25 carbs.

12:00 1 Edge Carb Control Bar, 200 calories, 2.5 carbs.

2 pm I can of soup with a small can of vegetables added, 200-250 calories,

20-25 carbs.

4:00 I have my protein meal for the day. A 3 egg omelet, or 6 to 8 ozs of

meat, poultry or fish, 300-600 calories, 0-5 carbs.

6:00 2 slices of Alvarado St Sprouted Multi-Grain bread and Smuckers Low

Sugar jam, 145 calories, 28 carbs.

9:00 - 10:00 I usually have either 1) a slice of the Alvardo bread, with

peanut butter, and a cup of Swiss Miss No Sugar Added Hot Cocoa, which is

made with Splenda, 150 - 250 calories, 15-25 carbs or 2) an Edge Carb Control

Bar, 200 calories, 2.5 carbs.

I have a cup of herbal no caffeine tea with each meal and drink an 8 oz glass

of water each hour. I also walk 1 to 3 miles a day.

I plan out every meal the day before and make adjustments based on my bg

readings. The most important factor is to test your bg level often and make

adjustments as needed.

5'4 " , female, was 120# at dx, which is normal for me. If I keep to my

program, I'll stay there, and if I start upping the carbs, the weight starts

creeping up. I am built like the type II that I am - slim hips and legs -

apple shaped waistline - and always have been (like my dad). There is no

other diabetes in my family, although my sister is overweight and insulin

resistant.

Janie, before diagnosed my weight 110 pound and drop to 99.

this month I already get that 110 back :)

(But I feel I'm slimmer than before eventhough my weight same with

before diagnosis)

I recall you've told about your husband lost his weight,

How's he doing?
