Guest guest
I am curious. Is there anybody like my husband who was slender when they got diabetes?? How many of us are there?? And do we have anything in common?? Here's my husband Monte's stats: He was 59 years old, 6', 180 when he was diagnosed. His mother and sister have it. Both of them got it around the same age. Sister is obese; mother was not. His diabetes is greatly helped with Metformin, so he's a Type II for sure, I believe. Anybody else?? Guest guest
Hi, Jane...yep, I' m one of the thin ones. My diagnosis came about after a routine physical when they found ketones in my urine on urinalysis. I had absolutely no symptoms. I'd been on a diet for a while to lose about 15 pounds and was quite pleased to find myself at 125 (I'm 5'8 " ) at that appointment. My doc started me on pills right away and the dietitian pointed me in the direction of lowcarb. My doc called me a " type 1.5 " . However, the pills never worked for me although I was able to get my BGs down some with lowcarbing. I actually got down to 116 pounds before I reversed things by upping my cheese and nut intake and bigger portion sizes. Then I had a GAD test that showed me to definitively be a type 1. There was about a year between diagnosis and starting insulin. I'm now up to about 134 and trying to stay there...love those nuts! Oh yes, I was 60 at time of diagnosis, now 64 and happily with good A1C and still no complications..and hope I never do, smile. Vicki << I am curious. Guest guest
I was about 25 lbs overweight when I was diagnosed. I am 5'10 " and weighed 175. I was thin (135-145) most of my life but after I turned 45 I added a few lbs each year. I was 54 when diagnosed. My grandfather was a diabetic so I have a genetic predisposition toward diabetes. After being diagnosed I lost 25 lbs the first year. I now stay within the 150-155 range. I haven't never taken meds for my diabetes. Ed from CT > I am curious. Guest guest
" Sounds great I think my diet is my worst problem Maybe then I could go without meds I want too but cant seem to get there Can I ask what kind of food plan you use Thanks linda/kc " I suspect that whether or not you need medication depends on each person's system. Diet may only be one factor. My systems seems to be able to handle more carbs than many diabetics. I have listed my meal plan below, but we all have to learn through testing what works best for each of us. I would suggest that if your bgs readings are outside the 90 to 125 range you might want to start with fewer carbs than my plan. My meal plan is for 1,500 to 1,800 calories and 125 - 160 carbs a day. I am 5'10 " and weigh 145-155, type 2, no meds. My target range is 90(/18=5) to 125(9/18=7). I test 5 times a day. I try to vary my meal plan as much as possible and always look for new products. Typical Day: 8:00 I can of Ensure, 230 calories, 40carbs. 10:00 1 small banana or 1/2 a large banana, 50-75 calories, 20-25 carbs. 12:00 1 Edge Carb Control Bar, 200 calories, 2.5 carbs. 2 pm I can of soup with a small can of vegetables added, 200-250 calories, 20-25 carbs. 4:00 I have my protein meal for the day. A 3 egg omelet, or 6 to 8 ozs of meat, poultry or fish, 300-600 calories, 0-5 carbs. 6:00 2 slices of Alvarado St Sprouted Multi-Grain bread and Smuckers Low Sugar jam, 145 calories, 28 carbs. 9:00 - 10:00 I usually have either 1) a slice of the Alvardo bread, with peanut butter, and a cup of Swiss Miss No Sugar Added Hot Cocoa, which is made with Splenda, 150 - 250 calories, 15-25 carbs or 2) an Edge Carb Control Bar, 200 calories, 2.5 carbs. I have a cup of herbal no caffeine tea with each meal and drink an 8 oz glass of water each hour. I also walk 1 to 3 miles a day. I plan out every meal the day before and make adjustments based on my bg readings. The most important factor is to test your bg level often and make adjustments as needed.
