Guest guest
Jacky, don't be discouraged...diabetes is a very individual disease, sometimes it takes a little experimenting to find what works for you. Have you been testing before and two hours after meals? Have you been weighing out your food portions? (Remember, portion size is a factor too!) Have you been writing everything down? Have you been exercising, and if so, when and for how long? Are you taking any meds? There are lots of variables. << Well it has been 10 days and I am getting discouraged. I am down to about 45 carbs a day (those carbs from veg, fruit and dairy) and my readings are still high (10-12 with a few lows). What am I doing wrong? Why are they so inconsistent? I am way below 1200 cal. per day, I feel terrible. I am going to try even fewer carbs tomorrow. How long will it take? Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? I have ordered the book everyone is telling me to get. I hope to have it next week. Jacky, the discouraged. >>

Guest guest
If it were me, I would cut out the fruits, and make sure the dairy is whole milk based. I find that I can eat whole milk yogurt, but not low fat or fat free. When I think I have to have fruit, I make sure it's berries (blueberries right now, but strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries are also yummy). In addition, for at least a few days, stop counting calories (if you can). I know I get way more than 1200 calories a day, and I've only recently stopped losing weight (for lack of exercise). Don't be discouraged. 10 days is still the beginning of the experiment. Guest guest
Thank you for your reply Robin, I looked at my book after I read your reply and I realized my readings rise with fruit, especially bananas...but not oranges. I will pass on fruit tomorrow and see how it goes. Berries are hard to come by here (Canada) in the winter. I eat yogurt every other day and have been using the fat free. Once the fat free is done I will try some regular....I am a big milk drinker and I really miss it, but I need the yogurt. Can you tell I am a control freak? I need to control this and it is driving me nuts. Jacky Thank you for the advice. RC Glaze wrote: > If it were me, I would cut out the fruits, and make sure the dairy is > whole > milk based. Guest guest
I hear that being a control freak runs with this disease. Don't worry too much about that. Guest guest
I hear that being a control freak runs with this disease. Don't worry too much about that. Everyone reacts differently to foods. Good for you being able to look at your log and tell what foods spiked you. Let us know how it goes tomorrow. When I think I have to have fruit, I make sure it's berries >(blueberries right now, but strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries are >also yummy). According to ' Guidebook; strawberries are 8.6%, raspberries 13.9% and blackberries 12.7% by weight carbohydrate. So a unit carb (15 gram) would be 200 gram strawberries or 100 gram of the other two. doesn't list blueberries but I would imagine they would run well under 20% carbohydrate. > >In addition, for at least a few days, stop counting calories (if you can). >I know I get way more than 1200 calories a day, and I've only recently >stopped losing weight (for lack of exercise). > >Don't be discouraged. 10 days is still the beginning of the experiment. > >Robin G. > > >>From: willabee@... >>Reply-To: diabetes_int >>To: diabetes_int >>Subject: I can't think of a subject >>Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 03:27:40 -0000 >> >>Good Day all, >> >>Well it has been 10 days and I am getting discouraged. Guest guest
Hang in there, your BGs will come down in time. Ten days is too short to expect really detectable results. I take it you mean 45 gram carbohydrate - if so, that is only 180 cal; meaning 1020 cal is coming from proteins & fats. If this is true, your body is not getting enough vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients - those three occur only in carbohydrate foods. If you can manage to lay your hands on " Loving Your Body " by Ken Keyes or " Guidebook to Nutritional Factors in Foods " by [both out of print but your library might have them or maybe your blessed with having large used book places] you will be able to see tables of foodstuffs that are rich in the esential nutrients. I would encourage you to optimize your carb intake to the nutrient-richest foods. I am not a doctor so I can't recommend intake levels but I can encourage you to avail yourself of whatever diabetic educational options you have - just make sure the instructor is certified and up to date as much new stuff has come out over the past several years. >Good Day all, > >Well it has been 10 days and I am getting discouraged.
