Many of you may know that I tore my rotator cuff in 3 places in Feb. I finally broke down and had a cortisone injection in it. The DR also wants me to take a new NSAID called VIOXX 25 mg. Does anyone know if daily vioxx or cortisone injections can cause any issue with the thyroid, anemia, or aldosterone? Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Download today - it's FREE!

If the cortisone exceeds your daily body needs of about 40mg and up

to about 100mg for stress situations, then it can slow thyroid

function by slowing the conversion of T4 to T3. But, the thing about

injections for this type of thing is that it tends to just stay in

the area where it was injected for the most part.

If vioxx is like aspirine or other similar anti-inflammatories, it

can cause thryoid from the blood to go into tissues at a higher

rate. This lowers blood levels of thryoid. However, it is not known

if this results in lowered thyroid function, since the thyroid is

used by the body. Anti-inflammatories like asperine tend to compete

with cortisol and act like cortisol in some ways.

Cortisones used this way in medicine tend to slow healing and that

is the price you pay for it's anti-inflammatory properties. It is

good in that it can prevent damage to tissues from swelling even

though healing is slowed.

All I know about Vioxx is that Ruth gets REALLY sleepy on afternoons on the days that she takes it.. on days she skips, she's less likely to fall asleep....

Her thyroid is undertreated.. but she won't listen to me about it... so it could be just low thyroid that makes her sleepy and the vioxx making it worse.

Then it could very well be that my suspicion that it's low thyroid and possibly adrenal is probably true.. her doc will only test TSH and she thinks that's just fine....

*sigh*
