Guest guest
AIDS prevention: 1.5 lakh medicos to be trained Monday July 31 2006 13:05 IST BHUBANESWAR: A lot has been said about HIV/AIDS. Yet when it comes to the ground level, not much has been achieved either in case of ascertaining the spread of the disease or in preventing the menace. The reason, according to technical expert of Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), USA, Dr Samarendra N Misra, is that educating people about HIV/AIDS and its prevention in India is too complicated, as it has to deal with socially sensitive issues. The number of HIV infections in the country is difficult to determine, but according to estimates of UNAIDS, around 5.7 million people are living with it, said Misra at a training of the trainers (TOT) workshop for medicos on HIV/AIDS organised in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA), Orissa State Branch and NACO here on Saturday. CHAI will provide advance training programmes on HIV/AIDS to about 1,50,000 medicos in the country; he said and added that about 5,000 doctors in five States had been trained. The training programmes are being conducted in the Capital cities of various States and the doctors attending the training programme will further carry out the programme at the district levels. Plans are afoot to impart training programme to nurses and laboratory assistants too. IMA national president Dr Sudipto Roy inaugurated the two-day workshop. Around 50 doctors from twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar attended the workshop. http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?
