Guest guest
Oh, right...pancreatic cell transplants have been done on a small number of people in Canada recently. (It is referred to as the " Edmondton Protocol " ). It is strictly experimental but they are extending the scope and I believe they're going to try it at a couple of other medical centers worldwide. There was a cover story on it in last month's Diabetes Interview. Very interesting. But that's quite a different thing from the " cure " in Malasia. Vicki << Hi all, I watched a program on tv last week and they spoke of a cure for diabetes, a pancreas transplant. Several have been done successfully (according to the show). I cannot tell you anything more on the subject, just that they interviewed the dr. and one patient who had a successful transplant. She was a type 1 brittle diabetic in her mid 30's. Guest guest
You're right, of course, Jacky. I forgot about that one, as it such a faraway dream kind of thing. Guest guest
I know, that is what I thought when I watched it. The women they interviewed was so brittle that she would drop low and into coma state regularly. The transplant gave her a life. Guest guest
True, but it's a cure for type I diabetics only. The down-side is that they will have to take anti-rejection drugs for life. And that's if their body's immune system doesn't attack the new pancreas and/or beta cells anyway. I really like the way the media is calling it " a cure for diabetes " as if it cures both types of diabetes. It will not help type II's insulin resistance or cure our insulin response problems. Still no hint or promise of a cure for type IIs. ========= I may not have gotten all the facts, but at approximately 12/29/01 8:03 PM I believe Jacky is rumored to have said: >I watched a program on tv last week and they spoke of a cure for >diabetes, a pancreas transplant. ===================================================================== Maurer - Type II since 4/87, diet, exercise, and meds. http://homepage.mac.com/maurerw/index.html (only 45 minutes from Sequoia National Park in Central California) =====================================================================
