HbA1c of 5.0% relates to an average blood sugar level of about 90 and 6.0% relates to a 120 average. The available studies indicate that the risk of diabetic complications increases modestly as HbA1c increases from 5.0% to 6.0% and then increases substantially as the level exceeds 6.0%. The implication is that while occasional readings over 120 are not necessarily harmful, an average closer to 100 is certainly desirable if one is interested in keeping the complication risk down.
