Guest guest
Hi, Roxanne...I exercise between one and two hours after eating. This guarantees my BGs will go down. If I exercise after the two-hour window the BGs go up. And I wait an hour to give the food time to digest. As far as length of exercise, when I go to the gym I generally do about 45 minutes -- 25 on the treadmill and the rest with resistance machines and free weights. On my walking days (every other day) I do a half hour briskly in the neighborhood if weather is nice; this includes a few small hills, or if it's too cold or wet, I go to the mall. In no case ( gym or walk) do I work up a sweat. I only exercise once a day, after breakfast, not after every meal. Vicki << Also, some of you have mentioned exercising after every meal. Do you exercise immediately or do you wait a while to allow your stomach to rest? Also, how long do you typically exercise and how strenuously? If I worked up a sweat, I'd have to shower and if I showered several times a day, I'd really dry my already dry skin out. Guest guest
Jacky, you're doing great! Re the below...sometimes drinking a big glass of water will help eliminate those hunger pangs. We should be drinking two quarts of water a day anyway...only problem with doing it late in the day is the need to get up in the middle of the night to pee...but this may not be a problem for you as your bladder is considerably younger than mine is, smile. << If worse comes to worse I will just have Jell-O, but I find I have to eat something or I am sooooo hungry I can't sleep. >>
Guest guest
Roxanne, sounds like you are on the right track. It took me about a year to find the right combination of diet, exercise and life style adjustments to get my bg level to my target range (90=5 to 125=7). > I tried the Carbo Addict's meal plan, but of course, since it is not > geared to diabetics, my bs's did drop, but not enough. So, I've > bought the Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution and plan on following > his suggestions. Books will provide you with a good starting point. However since are bodies all react differently you will probably have to make adjustments based on your own testing. I used a nutritionist to help me develop the meal plan that is working for me. > He suggests having smaller meals throughout the day with about 3 1/2 > to 4 hours between meals. I have read from other sources that > suggest a meal should be eaten within 2 hours of awakening to aid in > weight loss. Do you find that this is necessary to help control your > bs's? I just want to plan my breakfast time, so that my other meals > match up to the times I usually serve snacks and meals to my daycare > kids and family. A later breakfast would work better. > I try to eat something every 2 1/2 hours. Four hours is too long for me. Every night I make out a meal plan for the next day. If I am traveling somewhere I bring a low carb bar (I use Edge, 2.5 carbs/210 calories). My first meal of the day is around 8:00 am. I go to bed around 11:00 to 12:00 pm. If I go more that 8 hours before having breakfast my morning bg reading will be outside my target range. > Also, some of you have mentioned exercising after every meal. Do you > exercise immediately or do you wait a while to allow your stomach to > rest? Also, how long do you typically exercise and how strenuously? > If I worked up a sweat, I'd have to shower and if I showered several > times a day, I'd really dry my already dry skin out. Roxanne in WA > I exercise (walking 3 miles at a fast pace every day) around 1:00 in the afternoon after lunch. If I eat out with friend or relatives, and had a few too many carbs, I go for an walk when I get home. I also make sure I have 70 to 80 ozs of water each day. I think we are suppose to drink 1/2 our body weight in ozs of water. I weigh 150 so my target is 75 ozs of water a day. This works for me but may not for you. Trial and error is unfortunately the only way to find what works best for you. There is no other way but to test as much as possible to see how something affects your bgs. For me, I don't eat breakfast until after my chores, if my fbg is above 90. The exercise of the chores keeps my morning rise in check. If I'm lower, I eat an Atkins breakfast bar on my way out the door, and then I might not eat again until noon. If I get hungry, I'll have more protein. I don't eat carbs in the morning, because my dawn rise is pretty significant. Your body gets accustomed to a certain routine, and for those who don't do strenuous exercise in the morning, I'd say you could try not eating breakfast until later. On the other hand, if your dawn rise is significant, eating some protein upon rising can stop the rise in many cases as the body gets the food and doesn't think it needs to release glucose anymore. The dawn rise is the body's way of preparing for and creating energy for your day's beginning. I think you should try it both ways - eating protein upon arising and not eating until later. Do each several days in a row, test, test, test and keep good notes. This will give you the best answer for you. I think eating smaller meals more frequently allows us to metabolise the carbs better. It's the law of small numbers - small amounts of food plus small amounts of carbs = less rise = less insulin needed, whether produced by pancreas, pancreas stimulated by meds, or injected insulin. It works well for me, especially since on the farm I can't always plan a period of activity - sometimes it's just necessary to go out and do hard work right now. I don't know about the exercise dynamic. What does Bernstein or Becker say? Barb

Guest guest
Hi Roxanne, I am really new to all this, can I am proud to say I can answer part of your questions. > Also, some of you have mentioned exercising after every meal. Roxanne in WA > Here is what I do, and it ensures at least a 5.4-5.9 2 hours post eating. Breakfast, 9 am (I can tolerate as high as 25 grams of carbs at breakfast) two hours later -after an active morning of getting up my 2 years old, getting us ready for the day, and heading off to work then starting my job as a teacher) 5.3 (yesterday) Lunch, 12:00 pm - 1 miles walk around the block, sometimes with one of my students - aka not very fast walk. 12:30 eat lunch, salad with lean chicken or deli turkey with cheese, or homemade soup - 2 hours later 5.9 Dinner 4:30 pm (My husband works 5:30pm -3:30am so we must eat early to eat together) Usually I have chicken, steak, pork or fish with veggies, or one of my new low carb homemade dinners (low carb stuffed cabbage or no noodle lasagna). At 5 pm DH leaves and DM comes over. We walk from 5:30-6:30, now up to 3 miles with hills and stuff. If it is raining I throw in my tape and work out for 60 minutes, while she gets a work out chasing around my dancing two year old, trying to get him from getting kicked or bumped into by his arms or flying and legs a going crazy, mom. Two hours later I will get a reading between 4.1-6.1. Snack - 8 pm all protein or a very small salad with protein. I have made up little 2 ounce low carb burgers and I have one with mustard, or I will divide out a portion from the night's supper. If worse comes to worse I will just have Jell-O, but I find I have to eat something or I am sooooo hungry I can't sleep. My big problem is the dawn rise. I am now trying ALA and chromium in the evening before bed with my snack. My lowest reading in the entire 5 weeks that I have been doing this has been 6.4.(high 8.1) ouch!!! I have a feeling the snack might be the culprit so, Yes, I am going to eliminate it....soon. But first I am going to try doing 20 minutes of stretch and tone exercise after Wild Man Will is tucked in. I would rather exercise then be hungry when I am trying to sleep. wow, that was long winded Jacky, 5 weeks 1 one day past diagnosis and hanging in there. Guest guest
First of all , 70 is not hypo though it is close. An " official " hypo is anything below 65. But if your husband's BGs have been high for an extended period of time, anywhere near normal numbers will make him feel as though he is having a hypo. Glucovance is a sulf, a class of medicine that can cause hypos. I strongly suggest another medication, Glucophage is a good one except if your husband has pancreatitis maybe not. Insulin may be the way to go...once you figure out the correct dosages, the danger of hypos is a lot lower than with a sulf. However, don't let the doctor prescribe NPH insulin -- that one can cause hypos because of its curve of action. I use Ultralente twice a day for basal (background) and Humalog matched to carbs at meal. I think this is a reasonable regimen...it certainly works for me. And it could work for your husband, espcially if you're already lowcarbing with not excellent results. Can you give us a typical daily menu for your husband? Vicki << He was taking glucovance 2 pills twice a day but has decided to back down to one a day (the original perscription) and is still crashing. He gets as low as 70! Any ideas? We do the small meal thing, six times a day, low carb, low fat no added sugar ect. What do you think?? >>

Guest guest
The last time I wrote I told you guys that I had gone for blood tests and they came back normal. I have really been on my doc for awhile now as I really believe it is my thyroid and my doc keeps insisting it isn't my thyroid. On my last visit I asked him about my thyroid again and my doc said it wasn't my thyroid when we were talking and then when I said are you sure as I have a sore throat and I am having a hard time swallowing that last few days. " Your symptoms are not thyroid related and I really don't believe it is your thyroid. " Then he checked my neck and said " Hmmm, your thyroid seems to be enlarged. We better send you for an ultrasound. " Then the rest of the story.....LOL! So he did a ultrasound on my thyroid. The ultrasound found a thickening of the thyroid and a node on the right side. He has sent me for a nuclear iodine test to see if the node is hot or cold. I saw a lot of red on the screen where my thyroid is but then again maybe that is normal with the iodine. My doc is sending me to an ENT to read the results and get a second opinion. I asked why he wasn't referring me to an endocrine doc and he said I didn't need one yet. I don't understand that but I will go tomorrow and find out I guess. My doc told me that he doesn't think it is cancerous but that we should check things out to make sure it isn't. I'm not jumping to conclusions that it is cancerous but at the same time I am not taking much faith in what he says as this is the same doc that has insisted for a year now that it couldn't be my thyroid. Also I asked my doc about changing me from the levothyroxine to armour or something more natural and he said I didn't need those. I just needed the levothyroxine, that it is keeping my thyroid from enlarging any more. I told him I don't feel any better and in fact I may feel a little worse. The fatigue has gotten so bad that I won't drive more than 10-15 minutes away as I am fighting to stay awake after that. I have many days now that I feel like I am coming down with a cold or something but I never do. Then I will have a good day or the beginning half of the day is good then the rest I am just wiped out. Does anyone else feel like this? I went to a natural health food store this weekend and bought some homeopathy medicine that has thyroidinum. I was also given a referral to a MD that is also a naturalpath doc. I am going to give him a call tomorrow to see if I can get in to see him. I want someone that will listen to me and try to help. I love my current doc but we are just banging heads with this thyroid problem. I just don't feel like he is listening or that he is knowledgable about the thyroid and therefore he should refer me to someone that deals with the thyroid. Anyway, thanks for listening. Any encouraging words from you guys sure would help right now. I guess I just am feeling a little down as I finally figure the problem out but my doc just doesn't seem to be helping. Thanks again for listening and sorry it is so long.
Guest guest
I hope that I can ease your mind a little. I had doctors tell me the same thing for 10 years. Finally after 2 1/2 years of watching a nodule grow they took the left lobe out with a nodule the size of a golf ball and it was NOT cancer! I still have a large right lobe left but I finally have doctors that listen and will keep me properly medicated! So try not to worry about it being cancer. Though it can happen but it is usually not. Good luck and hope that the ENT gives you good answers. Oh and my doc also sent me to an ENT first too. " Dreams are the touchstones of our character.
Guest guest
Can you give the doc a call and get copies of your labs, with the lab's ranges... I think it might be valuable to see what the numbers look like and to see what tests have been run. Good for you for hanging in there and not giving up.. the sooner you find out what is up and take care of it the less grief you'll have done the road. I have no idea how much damage I'll be dealing with for the rest of my life cause I didn't know enough to ask questions..... We do know that T4 can suppress the growth of a nodule... but we also know that without adequate levels of both it and T3 you're gonna feel like crap.... I think you want more than a nodule that fails to enlarge and feeling like crap, right? Guest guest
Dump that doc. I had one just like that that caused me to not get thyroid treatment for another two years, something I really regret. Why can't you just get Armour from my RX for less. There are pages on the web on how to convert synthroid or lavoxyl to Armour. Obviously, you have auto-immune thyroid disease and tests are of dubious use in such situations. Guest guest
My husband needs to go for a sleep study. I know a few people who have had it done and it is a piece of cake. They just hook some wires up to you and you sleep. Nothing painfull at all. I personally haven't had the scope done either but a friend has and she said it was easy. They gave her something to relax and she said it was over before she knew it. good luck and hope you get some answers. " Dreams are the touchstones of our character. Guest guest
I'm sorry I guess I don't know how to navigate the messages in this thread but apparently someone asked me about my sex drive or something in response to my message. I'm so so with that. Sometimes I'm in the mood but a lot of times I just not intrested. Anyway, I went to see the ENT today. He took me in a whole different direction. I'm getting so frustrated. Today the ENT didn't have the results because my doctor didn't send them. So the ENT finally got a hold of the thyroid scan(the one where they injected nuclear die into my arm). He said it showed that there were no cold nodules(thank God) but he said it didn't show any hot nodules either. He said as far as he can see it looks normal. He also felt my neck and said he didn't feel anything. My neck was tender but he didn't feel any enlargement. He did make a comment that the reason my doc was giving me the synthroid was because he was treating the patient and not the labs. That did make me feel better to hear that but... now the ENT said I should have a scope run down my throat to see why I am having problem swallowing and a tender neck. He also is ordering a sleep study be done on me. I know I am having problems sleeping but I think that is a symptom of whatever the problem is not the problem itself. I just don't understand why I am going in so many directions. So my scope is scheduled for next Tuesday. I don't think that is a bad idea but I am not thrilled about the sleep study being done. Have any of you had a sleep study done? Or a scope for that matter? Thanks for your guys help. > > I believe that the adrenal hormones have everything to do with > this. Guest guest
My daughter had a sleep study. There's nothing to it. They attach a bunch of wires to your scalp and hook them to a machine. All you do is sleep and go home the next morning. It may be difficult falling asleep with all those wires attached, but even if you only sleep a little while, they can complete the study. Oh yea, the wires are attached to little pads that are glued to your scalp. Like when you get an ekg. They don't pierce the skin. My dh had the endoscopy. They put you to sleep for that so you will know nothing. Your throat will be a little sore for a couple of days. Plan to take it easy for a few days as that anesthesia will slow you down for a while. When I had my lumpectomy last week, I thought I was going more hypo, but it was the after effects of the anesthesia. Blessings, Debbie K. -----Original Message-----From: So my scope is scheduled for next Tuesday. I don't think that is a bad idea but I am not thrilled about the sleep study being done. Have any of you had a sleep study done? Or a scope for that matter? Thanks for your guys help.
