,

I saw your posts about what to ask your doc before surgery. I didn't respond because I don't know. I'm in the same boat as you. But if you get any goods answers let me know;) Because I will be dealing with what you are now pretty soon. I have an ultrasound on Aug. 5th....did you have one? What do they look for? Hang on with this group....i'm new here too, and I find that it is overloaded with messages BUT I get alot of info reading through the posts. Some things are answered about a question I hadn't een thought of. Give it some time and ask for support if that's what you need. This is scary stuff that we have to go through and I find that just rambling and having someone really understand helps alot.

But twice very recently I asked for advice on what to ask my surgeon before

the last appointment and I didn't get one single response. I thought that

there were more educated people on the subject and that they would have some

input for me. That was more upsetting and this was kinda the last straw.

I've never had surgery so that's not an area that I can comment on from personal experience...

But I do still care...

Thanks Serena. Yes I had 3 ultrasounds and a thyroid scan. They look for nodules and the size of your thyroid. They can't tell if a nodule is hot or cold by an ultrasound though.

Thanks Topper. I guess I am letting my nerves get to me and making me more sensitive. I had my gallbladder out back in 93 but I am still nervous.

Serena,

You mention rambling.. I can't even begin to tell you what profound things have been found through rambling.... that's why I do it so much... but since we've become so busy I try to flag it so that those who just don't have time for random thoughts can skip over....

I found out that by taking a dose of thyroid at bed time that my insomnia went a way.. that was from a ramble....

Oh gosh.. there are just too many things to list... Rambles are GOOD things...

And not just for the specifics that someone pics up to try, to relieve symptoms, but to find out that others are dealing with things that folks around them don't understand..

How many of us are labeled as lazy and sloppy and stupid? We're not lazy, we're exhausted.. we're not sloppy or bad house keepers, we're too exhausted to do anything more that what is absolutely mandatory, and sometimes can't even do that.. and we're not stupid, most of us have higher than average IQs but we do have short term memory issues.. and all of that is due to body chemistry being all out of whack due to low thyroid.

Hearing that someone else is facing the same challenges lets us know that we are not at fault and are not inept...It just shows us that this crap will all get better when the thyroid (and adrenal issues) are taken care of in the best way possible.

I went for a LONG time thinking that I'd never walk again without crutches and actually feared that I'd end up in a wheel chair... Look how far I've come!!!

I've learned so much from being a part of these groups and I still learn something new everyday....

We all get scared and upset.. it's part of what this thyroid mess does to us.. that's why I try to remember to remind everyone to give us a chance to respond and if no one does, to repost....

And the invitation is a standing one, to write to me or for anyone that needs someone to 'talk to' or are too shy to post to the group... I have no problem with relaying some of the embarrassing stuff to the group and then the person can read the group's comments without blushing ALL the way to their toes!!!

I had a hard time, at first, asking questions about bladders, and bowels and periods.. but that info has helped me soooo much.. that I don't mind talking about it at all.... it's gonna give then next person the answers that they need to feel better!

I'm in my 'middle forties' *wink* and have never had a surgery, well, one, on my finger.. but they didn't have to knock me out for that and the microsurgeon actually let me look at what he was doing through the microscope, it was AWESOME!!!! I have a feeling, though, that I'd be a basket case.. they'd be sticking me with needles after they knocked me out.. it would really do a number on my phobia.....

.....see when I was a baby a nurse broke off a needle in my arm... then tried to dig it out before anyone could see... I was 2 1/2 and screaming like a banshee... mom came to see what was wrong.. put it this way.. the lady was lucking mom was more concerned with my arm then killing her for maiming her kid. The doc ended up having to cut it out... it scraped up the bone and I still have the scar. Mom told me about it hoping that if I understood what had happened to cause the fear that it would go away... sad to say, it didn't help.

I know it my head that it doesn't hurt.... and I know that it won't happen again. But the best I can do is explain the story to whoever is gonna stab me and make sure that they are out of range of my foot.... I just close my eyes (I can't even watch it on tv) and they tell me everything that they are doing.. and I'm fine...

I was sick once, strep or tonsillitis or something, bad.. dad had to carry me to the bathroom cause I couldnt' walk, I was sooooo weak. Mom took me in for a penicillin shot.. that worked EVERYTIME... so here is this girl, to weak to go pee without help... it took my mom and too nurses laying on top of me to hold me down long enough for the doc to give me the shot in my butt...... I think that was the time that mom finally told me the story... I was getting too big and strong to hold down!!!!!

I have one million messages in here right now, and I think I haven't even

managed to wade through messages that are now 3 days old. The boards are

soooo busy right now, and I've been working overtime on and off recently.

I'm on here in the mornings, after getting off of work until I can't hold my

eyes open. Then, one of two days off, I may be reading messages and

responding for 12 hrs or more. Please don't take any of this personally.

We have brain fog too, and some or many of us literally fall into bed

because so many of us are still sick or semi sick and can't remember that we

were going to research something, then reply to it, and then it ran together

with everything else. Some things I may not know as much about as I think

someone else might have more knowledge on a particular thing. I'd rather

not be giving advice, if it's poor advice. Also, I am self treating, so I

might have told you that if the doc doesn't agree with what you want, then

fire him, etc....etc....I haven't consulted a doctor about a thyroid

surgery, and am surrounded by lousy doctors who know nothing about thyroid.

I have no insurance, so, if I could, I'd probably do my own surgery, but

they won't let me do that one, lol, or give myself my own scans, plus I

can't pay for them, so, no, I don't have experience on this one. I DID have

experience on this, so that's why I fired all 4 doctors because their answer

to everything was " No " and " $ynthroid " . You say it is the surgeon? I would

guess that he's going to turn you back over to your regular doc, if he's

going to remove your thyroid. I have not had thyroid removal or FNA (fine

needle aspiration).

This surgery is different though because it is on your neck, and that seems to be much scarier to me, sort of a claustrophobic feeling, am I right? I can almost feel it, but from the descriptions that I've heard, post surgery, they say that they are recovering nicely, no horror stories. But, if you are hyper right now (can't remember yet), or you have a nodule pouring thyroid hormone into your system, you're probably 10 times more on edge. Glad to see that you're getting the surgery instead of being a "crispy critter" with the nuking thing. I really believe that the RAI should be reserved for cases where a person can't have the surgery because of an advanced state of hyper, like Topper's. (Though hers shouldn't have been, had they treated her with other things in time).

Yes it sure does seem scarier because they will be cutting open my neck. I have also heard that recovery isn't all that bad. I am hypo but with the hashi's ya never know when you will go hyper or swing back and forth. My one doctor thinks that the nodule may be producing inactive thyroid hormone.

I agree, .... RAI should be used ONLY when there is no alternative for the situation. Because of the doc that chose not to test me, chose to ignore my OBVIOUS symptoms (so obvious he actually made comment of them on my chart) and told me to go home.. I was never given the opportunity to even ask questions. The next doctor diagnosed my case on site and sent me to the hospital where they started to give me some of the info on what I'd be facing while we waited for the results of the labs. They confirmed her diagnosis. They did the scan, confirmed that they thyroid was perfectly clear of growths or nodules of any type. The mixed up my lovely capsule and had me sign the paper that said that I couldn't sue them for anything that resulted from what they were about to give me.

This is why I get so animated with folks that wait to find out what is wrong, that accept it when the doc says that you're okay even when you know, inside, that something is wrong.

I listened to the doc when he told me to go home. That I was too fat to be sick. The I should be happy that I could eat anything I wanted and lose weight.

It nearly cost me my life. And has cost me my quality of life. How much of what I'm dealing with now is not from the years of being under dosed on synthetics? How much is from the radiation? How much is from being in thyroid storm for such a long period of time?

I'll never know. That paper I signed, the one that they told me I had to or I would die, prevents me from doing anything to the ones the gave me the radiation.

I did NOT want to sign it. But they said that I would die if I did not get the treatment right away.

After they gave it to me. They told me that I'd waited to long too come in, that it was my fault if I died anyway. It was MY fault, not the fault of the doctor that saw my symptoms and never took the time to run a few tests.

I say it over and over again... PLEASE listen to your body when it says that there is something wrong and then find out what is wrong. Don't make the same mistake that I did. Don't just walk away thinking you're a fool or stupid. The price for doing so is far too high.

I remember your post, but was not qualified to answer. I am sorry you want to unsubscribe. Several times I've had to repost. Once I even put "urgent" in the subject line. Also if I'm desperate for an answer, I may put someone's name (someone who I know can answer) in the subject line. I understand that things get missed with a board this busy. I've just been away from home only 8 hours and there are 70 posts! It would take an hour or two to catch up. I don't have that kind of time. Many times, I just have to scan the subject lines, pick a few and delete the rest. [bTW folks, this is why it's important to change the subject lines when one thing leads to another.] I honestly do not see how Topper, Janie, , , etc keep up with this board. It has got to be a full time job and there's no compensation. Thanks, guys for all you do.

Blessings,

Debbie K.

Blessings,

Debbie K.

We do it because we care.. to help just one person to understand and to find an answer is everything.

I have never been through thyroid surgery, so I really couldn't tell you

what to ask. In this case, all I can offer is support, not education.

Sorry about that.
