Hi,

I have low TSH and low T3, does anyone have any thoughts on that? I

just started on this journey and would appreciate any info. See doc

next week for more tests. Negative on the antibodies and thy-perox.

thanks,

Jean

Low TSH and low T3 can be a sign of secondary hypothyroidism. In

other words, hypothyroidism caused by a problem with the

pituitary/hypothalamus system. In this, the pituitary or

hypothalamus is not getting the messages to the thyroid to tell it

to produce enough hormone. TSH is the hormone the pituitary puts out

to tell the thyroid to make hormone. In these cases, the TSH test is

worthless and the free T3 test and free T4 test are probably your

best options for determining your thyroid status. Do you have

symptoms of hypothyroidism? If so, I would suspect you have a

pituitary or hypothalamus problem. It is not an uncommon form of

hypothyroidism. You might also be experiencing other indocrine and

hormone problems if this is the case. It depends on what is going on

with the pituitary/hypothalamus system. You might see an

endocrinologist for tests to find out more. The treatment for low

thyroid due to pituitary or hypothalamus problems is the same -

thyroid hormone. But if other hormone systems are not getting their

proper messages, too, you might need other replacements such as

adrenal and various sex hormones.

Pituitary. You need to have the TRH test done.
