Gladly Barb,

I was on Lantus...5 units at bedtime and Humalog with meals. Started out

with about 2 units per meal. Then I started to review my supplements and

get those lined up with the current information available. I started out

with 50 mg of a fast acting ALA and gradually increased it. When I was

without the ALA 1 gram of glucose would rase me 7 points. At the time I was

taking 100 mg of ALA...1 grams of glucose would raise me 5.5 points. It was

thought at that point that it was just a statistical bump.. I increased the

dose to 200 mg and the one gram of glucose raised me 2 points.....At that

point I stopped all insulin. It took 24 hours for Ron and I to figure out

why suddenly I was maintaining normal numbers...but we reviews many weeks of

records and discovered that it was the ALA. Initially I was taking it

because of my probability of having some neuropathy due to a mis diagnosis

for many years but one of the effects of ALA is also increasing your insulin

sensitivity. Another fact I learned is that exercise increases your insulin

sensitivity by 20 percent....ALA increases it by 20 percent but combining

exercise and ALA increases it by 60 percent. I have much better control when

I have been more active and friendly with the dreadmill.

I currently am on a regime where I take 100mg when ever I eat. If I have my

usual 3 meals and one snack that is 400 mg...but If for some reason I have

another snack i add another 100 mg.

Of course nothing works if I get into ice cream....VBG
