Guest guest
I disagree that it takes a hearing or deafie to learn sign faster. Its how you learn and who you learn it from. I'm actually taking ASL now and when they introduce new signs they dont give it a direct translation to an English word because that isnt ASL...its something to give a reference. Also when most of the signs have been introduced, their more or less acted out so you dont specifically associate an English word...there are some exact word translations but ASL is a seperate language/visual language...and with it being a visual language, why would hearing help you learn faster if its all visual. -Earl...who would agree that learning French would be easier being a hearie

Guest guest
I think finding a deaf club is a good idea; I know that is my problem, I have absolutely no one to practice with; my questions, don't folks in Deaf Clubs use ASL, and is that confusing? Marie, who has to look around! Re: Learning SIgn Language >I disagree with actually. > >I thin socializing with deaf people actually helped more, I tried for years >prior to deafness to learn...didn't go my way. When I was deaf and actually >NEEDED to communicate, thetas when I picked it up real fast! My only >suggestion is to find a deaf club out that way and hang out there, you'll >pick it up. > >Caren > > > >

Hey Barbara..you have probably been told this before BUT it is MUCH easier to learn sign before you become deaf. I didn't learn it til I was deaf and now wish I had when I could hear. It is much harder to grasp now. Anyone else forund this to be true???

BETTER WORDS WOULD BE WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WILL PROBABLY BECOME DEAF AND TO KEEP GOING. I know that it was easier for me because I did take one sign language class before I became Deaf. So, I had the foundation. Then, I became Deaf and took a class at Gallaudet University. Even more " ammo " . I did fine. One thing that I have noticed, though. If you don't use your sign language skills, even once in a while, you might " lose " them. I moved away from Gallaudet and the large Deaf community and I've noticed that my signing skills have deteriorated. I tend to talk (voice) alot now. I have been awaay from college about a year now, and even though Pat and I sign to each other alot, my signing has dfinatley gone down hill!! I used to get told to slow down, I signed too fast I guess (HA Ask Markk about that sometime, when I met him at con and we signed he went nuts trying to keep up with what I was saying!!! but I was nice and I slowed down) Last weekend I went to visit some friends at NTID and often found myself asking them to slow down!!! My hands getting screwed up with surgery didn't help much either! Caren
