Does anyone working in acute care utilize recreation therapy,

activity aids, art therapy, etc? We are a large multi-trauma center

and have been facing issues with patients needing more activity

during their day to support the progress they are making in therapy -

but they do not require more than their prescribed frequency of

therapy (PT, OT or both). We encourage patient and family

involvement but it either isn't adequate or enough. I'm curious what

others are doing to support the patient's needs for more activity.

Hello Kari:

Do you think clients need activity that is 'diversionary' or activity

that is 'therapeutic'?

Sorry Ron,

I was trying to say that activities are therapeutic in the broader sense in

that they provide a form of social stimulation for many residents and thus

have an emotional therapeutic value.

Those who have degrees in Therapeutic Activites analyze the movements needed

during a particular activity such as lawn bowling and establish ROM

improvement goals per the ability of the resident participating in a

particular activity. They work closely with the rehab. staff. If we have

some TAs on th elistserve perhaps they can add more information re their

role.
