I'm sure this is old news but Aetna just denied us on Ionto--they say

experimental. Has anyone tried to contest denials for ionto, and now I'm

wondering what other ins. Companies deny for ionto.

We just received a copy of the Aetna summary of the research they used to

come to this conclusion. It is interesting that of the five or so studies

listed (not sure of exact number as it is at work and I am writing this from

home), all but one showed positive results for ionto. However, all had

small sample sizes, which seems to be why Aetna made the decision they did

as they specifically stated that the studies sizes were small and that there

are no randomized controlled trials for ionto as of August 2004, which is

when this summary was completed.

Warmest Greetings!

1) Under HIPAA all insurors must use a single descriptor set, nationwide.

2) In the USA, that standard descriptor set is the CPT Codes of the

American Medical Association (AMA)

3) The AMA only establishes CPT Codes for proven effective,

non-experimental treatments.

4) There's a CPT Code for Iontophoresis

5) Therefore, Iontophoresis has been proved effective, and is not

considered experimental.

Hope that helps.
