hi mary,

the 2 fibroids i have are also submucousal, one being the size of a

grapefruit and on the top of my uterus and the other one being the size of a

baseball and located on the outside of the back wall of my uterus. thanks so

much for your response. so u started your period just 2 days following the

procedure and that was 2 days ahead of time. thats a question i have for my

radiologist. i am supposed to start my period the day following the procedure

and im wondering if thats a good thing or should i reschedule this procedure.

since you said your fibroid was on the outside of your uterus im wondering

where it was located. was it on the outside back wall? i have been having

unbelievably bad back aches from mine that is located on the back wall. was

wondering if u might have experienced the same thing. so the cramping

following the procedure is alot like labor pains? wow. how long did they

last.? were they pretty much over by the time u went home from the hospital.

? did u find u needed to take ibuprofen for a long period of time? thanks so

much for answering my questions.

hello mary,

was wondering did your doctor tell you to expect your fibroids to shrink only

50 % after waiting for a 6 month period? this is what my doctor has told me.

that this procedure is considered a success if the fibroid has shrunk 50%.

my 2 fibroids are quite large being grapefruit and baseball size so im

wondering if i will feel the relief i am expecting. incontinence is quite a

problem with me and i am so anxious to have this go away. today is my 44th

birthday and i tell u i feel alot older with all of the symptoms i have going

on.

thanks for listening and responding!

hi laura,

i had uae done on 8/29/01. i have a 6 cm subserosal? fibroid. my uae

procedure went relatively smooth. prior to procedure the nurse inserted a

foley, and an IV. once i was taken into the radiology room, i was given

something to help me relax and a local anesthetic to numb the right side of

my groin. I was so relaxed that i fell asleep throughout the first half of

the procedure. i awoke when they were redirecting the cathetar to embolize

the right side. i felt nothing throughout the procedure itself. as soon as

the procedure was over the cramping started (which is a good sign that the

uae is working) i had labor like cramping for about 12 hours after the uae

but was on a morphine pump so i could give myself pain med whenever i felt

the need.

i was released from the hospital in just over 24 hours. i was sent home with

antibiotics, pain meds and ibuprofen. i had no nausea, just some slight

swelling around the small (less than 1/2 " ) incision. i suggest wearing loose

fitting panties and sweatpants for a couple of days afterwards. i started a

period just 2 days after the procedure (which was a couple days ahead of

schedule) and have never had the discharge that i have heard other women

mention ( i think that is because my fibroid is outside of the uterus.) i

won't know how much size reduction i have had until my MRI in March, but i

have been almost pain free since the procedure.

all in all, i would say my experience went very well and i wish the same for

you. good luck

laura,

my fibroid is located on the outside, back wall of my uterus. the damn thing

had my uterus basically flattened. I was shocked when i saw the MRI pics! No

wonder I hadn't been able to get pregnant!

i really didn't have back aches from my fibroid, but i think that is because

it pushed everything forward. but, i was always running to the bathroom to

pee! if i drank any quantity of liquid i was in the bathroom every 15

minutes for sure and i was always constipated. since my uae i can make it

for over an hour without using the restroom, what a blessing!

about the cramping.......well, i won't kid you, it was BAD. when i say it

was like labor pains, i'm not kidding. the pain started almost immediately

when they finished the procedure and lasted about 12-15 hours. the good news

is that once it subsided, that was it, no more cramps! i left the hospital

without any cramping.

i took all the ibuprofen that was prescribed to me, (about 5 days worth)

because i was running a low-grade fever for a couple of days (which is

normal).

i had my procedure done 1200 miles from home and was able to drive home just

4 days after my procedure. i am in pretty good shape physically, meaning i

exercise 3-4 times a week, so i really think it helped me with a quick

recovery.

best wishes,

mary

laura,

my IR told me to expect anywhere from 25-75% shrinkage. he said 50% is about

average. my fibroid was starting to die at the core though because it had

grown so rapidly, so the Dr. said i may have even better results. Yippee!

I'll find out in March, can't wait!

by the way, my tummy is much flatter now too.

again, best of luck

mary

Successful UAE is measured by reduction/relief of symptoms. Some may

have a 25-30% reduction in size and have excellent relief. Others can

have as much as 75-100% reduction and have the same result. Still a

very few others may have no reduction and no relief. Most (85-95%)

have good results from UAE.

Please join the " embo " group. You will find volumes of very helpful

information. I have posted a number of updates on my procedure, and so

have many others. Good luck to you in February. All will go very

well, I'm sure.

Hi ,

I had mine in October. I was awake, but sedated for the procedure. No pain

during the procedure. Afterwards, I began cramping and was put on a

morphine drip. I stayed overnight in the hospital. The cramping was

intense and I was nauseated at times.

I felt much better the next day. I went home before noon. I experienced

cramping and spotting and low-grade fever for about 10 days. I was back at

work within two weeks and was pretty much back to normal.

Periods are less heavy without the horrible clotting. I was in a lot of

pain before the procedure and that is MUCH improved. I still bloat and feel

huge before my periods. I also have much more energy than before. I don't

collapse on the sofa when I get home from work. I can sit through a movie

with less squirming and discomfort.

I feel much better. I'm due for a sonogram and I'm anxious to find out if

there is much shrinkage.

I really like my IR. He was very good about explaining everything in detail

and answering all of my questions. He also helped me with my insurance

company. He has called me several times since checking up on me, asking me

how I feel, about my periods and pain, what I'm experiencing, etc.

My husband had to leave town four days after I had my UAE. I stayed home,

rested and babied myself. Love that Foreman grill!

Good luck,

Ginny

I am having embolization on Thursday. I am feeling nervous now. I am taking

Wednesday off work to get myself ready (emotionally ) to this procedure. I

hope my results will be positive.<
