Guest guest
Hi Crew - I have been reading all your mail about genealogy. Over a year ago my blood was drawn at the pediatrics clinic (genealogy clinic is housed here) and sent away to Boston, Massachusetts (I think that is where - I need to look up my records). The lab was looking for my mutant chromosome. I was told it was a BIG chromosome (#22). This is a newer test. Once they found the mutant gene in my blood they would draw blood from my daughter (now 28 years old) and look for the mutant gene in her blood. Would try to find a match to mine. If no match is found it is assumed Heidi did not inherit my mutant gene. Then we could assume I was the only one to have it in my family. My grandchildren will never have it. The buck stops with me. I also started it. I am the fluke. Neither of my parents had NF2. Well, the first time my blood sample was sent out - there was no luck in finding it. So they called me back to take more samples. It is just a couple of vials they take. No big deal. A few weeks back I heard they did find my mutant gene. Now my daughter, Heidi, has to have her blood drawn and sent off. This test takes a long time. It takes long to look around in this chromosome. It is not a 100% accurate test yet but it is one way of dealing with finding out if our children have inherited the mutant gene. My blood test result took over a year. I have an appointment scheduled for November 15, 2000 at the genetics clinic. I will find out more then and let you all know. And yes, my daughter has had an MRI. No tumors showed up on the scans. This is all I know for now on this procedure. In November I will try to get a name for this procedure. Jane
