I have a question about embolization and fertility. Embolization has been

used for years for uterine hemorrhage during childbirth. Are these people

told not to have any more children?

<I've been trying to find out more info on this procedure and its

impact on fertility and the ability to carry a pregnancy to term.

From what I've found on the internet and what I've read in this

group, it seems overall like a better option than myomectomy.

However, it also seems most docs/gyns aren't confident it's a good

idea for women who still want kids, because they don't know of any

studies or stats on long-term effects (if they've even heard of UFE).

I would think the procedure has been going on long enough now to have

useful information, but all I've seen is bits and pieces like this

statement written in 1999 saying something like " 12 women had

successful pregnancies after UFE " .

no. but they haven't been consistently tracked for fertility issues afterwards

either. there are

papers published that do take a retrospective look at some of these patients and

clearly point to

continued fertility/successful pregnancies. but, by and large, it just hasn't

been followed closely

for this issue of continued fertility over the last couple of decades.

No, I don't believe that these women are told not to get pregnant again

unless there is some other reason for them not to. PVA is not a reason

to not get pregnant. There have been a number of successful

pregnancies after UFE.

Therese, I think that the whole issue about UAE and

fertility is that most doctors feel that it is too new

to know the impact on fertility, whereas they do know

more about the impact of myo on fertility. From what

I have read women who have had embolization to treat

hemorrage during childbirth have gone on to have

successful pregnancies, as have women who have

undergone UAE. There are several in the " embo " group

who have.
