Guest guest
Hi everyone.... I wanted to ask for advice and information regarding medication and behaviors. My child Nicolas is 5 and has had pretty severe negative behaviors for the previous 3 years. He bites, pinches, pulls hair and is starting to hit. We have tried NUMEROUS behavioral approaches and some medications. Basically he is getting bigger and stronger and there is a concern for safety. I work at the University of Oregon and we have some wonderful resources and world renowned professors who have tried to help us all without much success. We know the triggers but Nic also is compulsive and a lot of the times there is no trigger that is visable. Our develpomental Ped. tells us that he seems very disorganized and obsessive compulsive. We also have discovered that Nic has a fast metabolism and burns through the medication about twice as fast as others. Nic also has been labeled Autistic. This actually has opened the door to many school options that are not available to children wihtout the label. Here is is alst of what we have tried and the doses. I am curious to hear what others have used and at what dosage's seem helpful. Risperdial- 1.mg liquid. We have tried up to 2. mg per day. some calming but not much help with the behaviors. He has been taking aprox. 1 year. (The product insert talks of much higher doses has anyone used like 5. or 6. mg per day?) Ativan- 0.5mg tablets. We have discountinued this med. We tried giving up to 2.mg at a time to try to calm him down for medical appts. but instead of calming him it HYPED him up. The Dr. told us he should have been snoring with the amount we gave him. (paradoxal effect?) Paxil- tried for only about 3 weeks. Might look at again. Clonidine- 0.1mg tablets. Dose 1/4 tablet every 4 hours. WE JUST STARTED THIS YESTERDAY! Nic weighs 45 pounds. If you are using or have used meds. with your children please respond with the types, dosages, and degree that they helped please. also I am curious if you use more than 1 med at a time. Thank you very much.
Guest guest
Give the clonidine a chance and see if you notice any improvement. You might want to look through the digest. There were several posts about clonidine in the last couple weeks. Guest guest
, At this point right now Patty is on 2 mg. of Risperdal. She has been up to four. It seems like there is a constant game of what amount works. Sometimes you need more, sometimes you need less. She takes this for Tics but it also helps with OCD behaviors as well as her mood. We can tell if she has missed a dose or not. Patty has been taking her own meds for years now. First she was only on the Risperdal and it worked wonders. But after years she had some side effects-extreme fatigue-and her tics came back. They then they experimented and put her on a combination of Risperdal and another med called Quanfacine. The two together worked well for a while. But since she was on them for such a long time she got the side effect of extreme fatigue again . We slowly decreased the Quanfacine to put her on something else but so far so good. So often we play the medication game. Sometimes she needs more, sometimes she needs less..... I have to add that it is really important that every time we go in they do an EKG. The meds can sometimes mess with the heart. They also watch her kidney. Also, we do not only medicate. For some of her repetitive behaviors we have given her " substitute " behaviors. We only work on one or two at a time. If we worked on everything then she would go nuts! We are lucky that we were able to do this. Patty is also a pro at relaxation techniques. When she was little I used to have to sit in the room with her and have her model me but now she knows how to do it herself. In the beginning she would just be in the same room as me and having me do that with the lights low seemed to make a difference. Probably it was because " I " was calmer. Who knows? I have to say though that I believe it is also true with many here, that when behaviors worsen when there is a medical issue coming up. The last time, just a month ago, when she was driving me nuts and quite cranky she ended up having a missive ear infection. I have tired to give you as much information as I could. Some is probably irrelevant to you but you never know. Take care and I wish you luck.
