This is interesting, from that link

" Following oral administration, about 95% of the dose of liothyronine

is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in four hours.

Liothyronine, not firmly bound to serum protein, is readily available

to body tissues. Its biologic half-life is about 2 1/2 days.

Liothyronine has a rapid cut-off of activity which permits quick

dosage adjustment and facilitates control of the effects of overdosage

should they occur. "

That's a much longer half life than I had realised, I thought it was

hours rather than days.

And again from that

" Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism can lead to a decreased level of

adrenocortical activity commensurate with the lowered metabolic state.

When thyroid replacement therapy is administered, the metabolism

increases at a greater rate than adrenocortical activity. This can

precipitate adrenocortical insufficience. Therefore, in severe and

prolonged hypothyroidism, supplemental adrenocortical steroids may be

necessary. "

Why are the Drs so reluctant to believe that when it's on the drug

packet inserts!!

And again

" Optimum dosage is usually determined by the patient's clinical

response. Confirmatory tests include: RadioActive Iodine T3 Resin

Uptake, 131I-T3 Red Cell Uptake, BMR, and the Achilles Tendon Reflex

test. Comparatively small doses (as little as 5 µg daily) may be fully

effective in some cases; however, in other instances, a satisfactory

clinical response may not be achieved until recommended dosage levels

have been exceeded. Daily doses up to 150 µg are sometimes well

tolerated and may be optimal in a few resistant patients. "

The last sentence of that one is useful for anyone who's Dr won't let

them increase dose.

Yes unfortunately when you read about the half life o fT3 you wil get any number

of DIFFERNT opinions. Even from research sites. I honestly believe the half life

depends on how much you NEED such as I think it lasts longer in thebody when you

have full saturation and also whenhavign a easy day. I think it is used much

faster whne we are veyr hypothyroid or when we have very active days. I knwo I

have played ht " stress dosing " extra on my mroe difficult days at work and it

seems to really nbe heloful with my fatigue.

GOOD QUESTION! I have often found it is jst new concepts that take

FOREVER to be indoctrinated into a doctor's mindset, but Cytomel has

been around for MANY years when wil it ever gain accceptance as a valid

hypothyroidism treatment? Probabyl nto until doctors realize patients

CAN be relied upon to multi-dose and and that they need to LEARN mroe

than what thye are taught in med school once in practice.

That makes sense to me, I've been taking an extra grain or two of

Armour late afternoon if I feel I need it for years.

Yes, plus most Drs seem frightened of patients knowing what is

happening in them, and Thyroid is one of those subjects where being an

educated patient helps.

Dr D-P that I started with was Hypo himself, that's what started him

along that specialty.

I have actually wondered many times if this fluctuating need for thyroid

might not be why many people have troubel feeling well on thyroid meds.

With Armour, or other natural thyroid meds you have conversion of T4

when you need extra T3, but with T3 only your T4 levels end up in the

dirt so taking a bit extra for harder days makes good sense.

Yes most the better thyroid or thyroid/adrenal doctors have dealt with

it ona real personal basis. I think it gies them a RARE INSIGHT into our

issues! LOL

Which is why I am feeling the fluctuation. As far as I can tell I have

no significant conversion and hence am doseing on the T3 only.

I experimented with an extra grain at bed time over the weekend and it

was a failure for me. I slept OK but ended up feeling very spacey all

day the following day, tried it for 2 nights and decided it wasn't for

me.

My stock of T3 arrived yesterday and I will probably try the change on

Friday so if I feel out of sorts it's over the weekend again.

I'll let you all know how it goes for me.
