Thanks for the information. Based upon your description, I just have huge

blood clots. The lower abdomen is very hard, and I was hoping that the heavy

bleeding was a sign that the fibroids were shrinking.

Since I have previously had a myo, I do not want to undergo any more major

surgery.

What facts did you rely upon in making your decision to have a UFE? How long

was your recovery?

I truly appreciate your insight and advice.

Hi Rose:

Thanks for the information. What procedure did you have? I have gone to

more than 5 gynecologist, interventional radiologist etc. and everyone is

ready to bring out the knife. Since I had a myo in 1994, and now fibroids

are at 18 week fetus size, my options appear to be limited to hysterectomy or

another myo. Quite frankly, I would prefer to take some great drugs that

would make these fibroids go away.

If you are in the midwest, I would appreciate the name of your specialist.

Thanks.

Hi. I think the only major piece of fibroid I expelled was about 2-3 " long.

It's difficult to recall exactly as this was back in April - it was kind of

spread out, not round and firm as they appear in their photographs, so I

have no idea how large it was to begin with. They're basically white, with

a grisly or rubbery texture but also streaked through with blood. I expelled

smaller bits of tissue prior to and after this but this was the only time I

actually got a look at any significant amount of tissue.

Sometimes when I would expel monster blood clots I thought they were dead

fibroids - I couldn't imagine a blood clot getting that large, but they do.

Fibroids are quite unique looking - I don't think now that I expelled any of

them before the UFE.

I also had intermittent tan/muscosy discharge after the procedure for a few

months- it tended to preceed and follow right after my period. It was very

different from period bleeding. It became less frequent gradually in the

months post UFE and I haven't really experienced any discharge for quite

some time now.

I just had a fibroid removed mere hours ago. My was prolapsed and trying to

deliver itself since it was pushing on my cervix. I was 4 centimeters

dilated. I met my specialist yesterday and she did the procedure today. They

knocked me out and I woke up happy. The minor carmping and bleeding I am

experiencing after surgery is nothing compared to what I have been going

through since mid October. I suggest that you see a specialist as soon as

possible.

I truly am not positive what the procedure was that I had, but the doctor

did it vaginally. My cervix had dilated itself to 4 cm and the fibroid was

trying to push its ugly little head out on its own. I think I was lucky in

spite of excessive bleeding since mid-October. She explained that she

clamped that puppy off, cut it out, then went back and cauterized off the

area that it was attached to. I had a D & C as well. I was out with a

general, woke up very happy and painfree. Still am pain free, barely

bleeding compared to previous months, and only twinges of cramps. I truly do

not think there is a magic bullet or drug. When I went to see my regular

doctor, he immediately put me on birth control pills. After a couple of

days, I thought the man walked on water, since bleeding was reduced to

spotting. This was a temporary solution until my body adjusted. Bleeding

continued and I produced some whopper blood clots. The worse was larger than

the size of the palm of my hand. I know this for a fact since the darn thing

fell out in my hand as I removed a tampon. I only know that I have been

grossing myself out for some time. Initially doctor's plan was to get my

anemia under control since my red blood count was down to 22 after excessive

bleeding. Faithfully took my iron and ate odd iron-rich foods. Last

Thursday, my family practitioner increased my " pill " to 3 a day and within 3

days, I stopped bleeding. I even felt frisky enough to go tampon and padless

for brief moments. The ob/gyn explained that I could be taking 10 pills a

day and it would only be a temporary solution and not take care of the

problem. I love this gal! The bad news is that Dr. Chien is located

in Everett, Washington, here in the Northwest. She works for the Everett

Clinic. Perhaps there is some sort of professional referral service. Now

this lady walks on water, giving up her lunch hour to schedule my procedure

as an emergency. She believes in mot treating symptoms, but fixing the

problem. Bless her heart, she said we would both enjoy our Christmas knowing

it was taken care of. I'm " grounded " from shopping today since they said I

can't be responsible for what I buy in my condition. I can't lift the grand

kids for a week. But recovering is generally 1 to 2 days. I no longer

remember what normal is.I feel good already. I will be thinking of you and

have you in my prayers. Take care.

Hi . I was 47 when I had the procedure done last Feb - I'd had

increasingly heavy bleeding, clots, long periods ( 2 weeks), gushing, anemia

etc, some bladder pressure, but the bleeding was by far the dominant

symptom.

I was in the hospital 2 nights - I was grateful this was an option as I

lived quite some distance from the hospital and it was in the dead of a very

severe winter. Like most others have reported, I was on the morphine pump

overnight, then took percocet as required and motrin for 10 days for

inflammation. I had brief episodes of pain for about a week after the

procedure - primarily first thing in the AM - perhaps there was some

connection to the immobility - when I got up and took the pain killers the

pain was OK. I never needed to exceed the prescribed dosage and in fact did

not use all the painkillers - I only took them when I really needed them.

I guess I would describe the recovery from UFE as something of a " process " .

I didn't have a lot of pain after the first week but had " twinges " for some

time after the procedure. Like many others I had intermittent discharge

which gradually went away. I did pass one significant piece of tissue about

2 months after the procedure.

I recall being very tired in the weeks after the procedure however I had

been anemic for months prior to having it done and I was commuting in the

winter, getting up early, and the whole business had been very stressful so

I don't know how much of the fatigue could be attributed directly to the

UFE. But it wasn't a big problem- I was fortunate in that I did not

experience any of the post UFE syndrome - fever, flu-like symptoms etc -

that some of the others have reported.

I noticed almost immediate reduction in the abdominal distention, which had

been significant. My " fat " jeans were loose about a week after the

procedure.

Regards,

Jill

Jill,

Your description of yourself sounds quite a bit like me. I am in Minnesota.

Where in the north are you? I am ready to do something about these fibroids

- most likely UFE. I am searching for the right medical people to help. I

will be scheduling my 1st consultation with an IR this week. My gyno is not

practicing right now and I don't think I can wait til spring. Another Dr at

the clinic sounds supportive but has had no direct experience with the

procedure. I feel pretty isolated.

Any chance you are in the Minneapolis area?
