Camper,

So very very sorry to hear of the excruciating pain

bleeding...your getting over your head here, it is

really time to act...

Please, I'm not trying to interrogate you, but to

get information helpful to provide suggestions

to take to your doctor on diagnostics and treatment

options....and of course, you don't have to answer

anything...

Have you been with this physician a long time?

Is she primary care, gynecologist, other specialty?

Your previous medical history--

Did you have the severe cramping as an

adolescent/in your 20's? How did you manage it?

Did you present with symptoms like -

chronic pelvic pain, lower back pain, diarrhea,

painful bowel movements? are you often tender

in the abdomen. Were your periods then with

heavy irregular flow?

Has your gyne ruled out Pelvic inflammatory

disease? cysts? endometriosis, which can

also occur along with fibroids? Did she

suggest laparoscopic/or hysteroscopic

diagnostics?

Do you have the insurance coverage to

get a pelvic MRI for a real accurate look at

what's going on with the fibroid/location/size

so that you have a better grip on what

treatment options to look at?

I don't see how you can continue coping

possibly..for months more trying birth

control pills...is your gyne oblivious to

the acute pain your experiencing.

Based on your description, if sounds like

your condition is way beyond medical therapy...

Anyone else on board experience severe

symptoms like Camper?

Worried about you...and we're here to support you.

Marsha

Hello All

I am also new to this group

At the age of 27 and 4 years later of pain and suffering with the worst

period pains you can imagine and in inability to conceive, I soon discovered

that my uterus had been inhibited by uninvited guests, (yes Fibroids).

Being young and desperately wanting children I wanted to preserve my

fertility so opted to have an abdominal Myomectomy. After undergoing

surgery and being laid up for two months I am now back on my feet and

fighting towards the next stage of my life and that is to have children.

I had the operation 9 months ago and am yet to conceive. Is there any one

out there who has had the myomectomy and later had children. If so did you

wait long. i know you cannot gage yourself on other people recovery time,

but as time is moving on i am losing hope. I have been trying for a child

now for 4 years.

This doctor only about three months. In about the beginning of

August I went and saw my regular doctor. She did blood testing and

sent me for a ultrasound to see what was happening. They found a 33mm

by 34mm by 32mm fibroid tumor on the backside of my uterus (at least

that is what the ultrasound report said). She immediately recommended

that I get to a gynecologist. So in September I saw the OBGYN. She

did a biopsy of the uterus which showed nothing. She then put me on

Vioxx (which we had to use samples while fighting the insurance

company to cover it) and then this past month put me on birth control

pills.

Had no problems from the age of 11 (when I first got my period and it

was regular right away) until about 27, it got a little heavier but

nothing to worry about or be concerned about. In fact, it did not

even interfere with my martial arts which I did about two to three

times a week from the age of 27 to about 32. I would go to work, and

alternating nights school or martial arts school and never had

concerns, just changed my pad and tampon like everyone else. Of

course I had always used a tampon and pad together for those days to

be double protected since I was wearing a white ge and you don't want

anything showing, especially if you were teaching the children's

class. From about 27 untl 34 I had nothing that would interfere in

life, did everything, went everywhere, you know, took the normal

precautions. Not even cramps but about twice until the age of 34.

The only thing that I have had since I was thirteen was a natural

discharge that was ruled out being anything else since thirteen and

was regularly watched from 13 to 18 by my pediatrician and then by my

adult doctor.

In the last two years I have developed: heavier natural discharge,

very soft bowel movements, nausea after I have eaten many times (not

always), have pains when parts of my stomach region are pressed

(noticed this most recently) cannot eat certain foods as they tend to

cause more nausea and major stomach upset, acid reflux, cramping

during the approximate 9-10 days of my period, a severe like vice pain

that comes on usually in the middle of the night and lasts for 2 days

every period but the Vioxx eases it enough that I am able to sleep and

function at work. I have had such a heavy bleeding that about a year

ago I had to change my pad and tampon (which both are usually filled

by that time) every 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 hours and now that is being done

every 1 1/4 hours and I don't dare go anywhere for the first 5-6 days

other than work and home. Even sleeping at night, I either have to

get up at least once during the six hours I sleep (I don't dare go to

bed before 1:00 in the morning or I need to get up two times in the

same night) and then still pray that I can run into the bathroom

before I flood my bed and my floor since blood pours out of me and

runs down my legs and this is with using a super plus tampon and pad

overnight.

She has not done any other testing other than the biospy since my

regular doctor did the ultrasound. Her first thing was to try to

control the pain and then to put me on birth control (and of course

the sample has estrogen) to try to lessen the bleeding. She does not

even want to do a D & C because she keeps saying " but your not anemic " .

She has never tested me during my period so how does she actually know

I am not anemic during my period. Hell my regular doctor already put

me on multi vitamin with iron because my very first blood test showed

low iron, and that was taken during my period. Which actually I

found out I was anemic when I was 21 and constantly tired at

college. My regular doctor then (different than now) put me on the

same thing, multivitamins with iron and it did great for the two

years that I was one it. I didn't know that I would end up needing

this the rest of my life apparently. My regular doctor has me coming

in regularly for blood work and I am going to ask her to redo the iron

test next week since I should be in the heart of my period. I really

want to see what it is Monday morning/Tuesday morning and see if it

drops during my period like I think it would.

MRI, don't know if the insurance would fight us on that. I have a

pretty good plan so far and they covered everything with my Carpal

tunnel surgery but I would have to find out if they would cover an

MRI. I am thinking of asking her to do another external ultrasound or

again the internal ultrasound (they did both at the other place) right

in the doctor's office so I can see where this fibroid is.

As far as waiting the three to six months she claims I have to give

the birth control, I'm not sure I can wait that damn long. I feel

like I'd rather be dead than alive since I have to basically give up

life for a week and a half every damn month. The only thing keeping

me going right now is work, my friends, and my parents being so

supportive. I live at home right now, was planning to move to San

Francisco but between the economy there being a little slow and this

happening, which means I cannot just go out and stay the month I

wanted to so I could interview with potential jobs and have one before

I officially move, that may be off for about another year. I really

wanted to be there by this summer.

Camper, I also am concerned for you. This seems like so much to endure. I

would be concerned about birth control pills because it seems like they can make

symptoms worse (why my gynecologist would not put me on them). Perhaps a second

opinion would be in order if you aren't getting the information from your doctor

that you need. Robyn A.

New person here

Hello everyone,

Long message ahead.

I am new to the group and have been having nothing but trouble for the

last year. For about the last year my periods have been so out of

control and getting worse every single month. I cannot even go

anywhere but work and home for about the first 5 to 7 days of my

period, am constantly having to change both the tampon and pad every 1

1/4 hours. For the 9 - 10 days that my period lasts, I am usually

living on three to four times the recommended doses of first Advil,

then to Motrin and last Aleve until last month when I was put on Vioxx

which seem to handle the cramps. Of course, I won't know how it truly

handles the vice like pain that last for 48 hours straight every month

which starts in the middle of the night and wakes me up and I end up

screaming and crying for about two hours until the medications finally

take effect. I will see in about two to three days how that works

since I am now taking 50 mg of Vioxx for it and my period should start

this weekend.

The doctor has put me on birth control pills to try to make the

bleeding lighter, I will see if it does anything in a few days when my

period should start. But she has not done anything to shrink the

fibroid or the uterus which is enlarged due to the fibroid. They also

found on the ultrasound some liquid around that area but she said that

would be from the ovulation which leaves some liquid, but my

ultrasound was taken two - four days before my period so I thought

there should not be anything from that left.

On top of all this, I am also having to see a Gastroenterologist

because my bowels seem to be all screwed up and that is causing me

other problems. I want her to see if this is actually all related or

am I just falling apart.

By the way, I am 36 years old, plan on not having my own children, but

adopting older children instead (since I was 14 1/2 years old I knew I

was never having children, don't have any patience for babies or

infants, and never will) but of course I feel like my doctor has not

listened to me about this because she keeps ignoring my questioning

about what we can do to get the fibroid and uterus shrunk. My next

appointment is in about three weeks and I actually asked my mother to

come with me so we can actually get answers to all my questions and

also to make sure she gives me a estrogen free birth control since

everything I have read says that estrogen promotes the fibroid to

grow.

Camper,

You should insist on finding out where your fibroid is located in the

uterus, how many you have, and what sizes they are, even if you have to see

another doctor. Treatment options vary considerably based on the location

of the uterus. If you only have the one fibroid, and it is submucosal

(inside the uterus), you may be able to have it removed by hysteroscopic

resection. This procedure is much less invasive than abdominal myo or

hysterectomy. Some doctors like to combine it with a laparoscopy to look

for and remove endometriosis and avoid perforating the uterus.
