I was diagnosed in 1999. Before PLS I was a very energetic person and

an avid dancer. Always on the go! Never had a major weight problem. I

have gained 25 lbs. in 2 years. I am confined to my scooter and can

only take a few steps with my walker. Am I the only one with this

problem? I try not to worry but I look in the mirrow and wonder where

did the old me go. Any suggestions!!! Pat in N.C.

Hi Pat,

I have 40 pounds to lose only 15 of which I can blame on PLS. Cannot

exercise at all.

I am trying the Atkins plan. I'll let you know how it goes. It is easier to

stay on than most diets and recent research indicates that it even good for

you. But. sorry, I can't eat Vaughns sweet taters.

Pat, et al:

I am in the same boat. I was diagnosed in Sept. 1999, and am about 25# heavier

also. But, I quit smoking in Nov. 1999, and that too has contributed. However,

not being able to do aerobic exercise at all, or not for very long, only able to

walk about 2 blocks, bike for 5 min., has also contributed. Not being able to

exercise much is the pits! I can handle about 5-8 minutes on my bike before my

legs turn to rubber.

Any suggestions anyone? There is no swimming pool withiin 25 miles, so that's

out too.

By the way, everyone, I got a job! Remember, I quit the clinic due to lack of

opportunities on their part, and in fact some pretty blatant discrimination.

Well, I got an offer this morning to be a personal attendant in a new group home

for mentally handicapped individuals. The home is only 6 1/2 miles from home,

has four quite independent female clients living there, and will open Jan. 2. I

am so excited! I will mainly assist them, supervise their medications,

transport them to and from jobs or appointments, and such.

It's full-time, with benefits (I am currently uninsured - scary), and day or

evening hours. I am so excited! Thank you God!

What a wonderful Christmas present to me.

Love to all,

Laurel

Pat in N.C...I just read your letter about weight gain. I was also

diagnosed with PLS in 1999. Since that time I have also gained alot of

weight, and plan on dieting real hard the first of the year. I have no

advice for you, but just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

Pat,

I started a diet that has me loosing weight, but I did it for health

reasons not for weight (but I needed it for weight too). I went to

see a specialist and he told me to drink raw, unpealed veg. with

lots of color. He told me to use lemon, oranges, and distilled

water to blend it with. He told me that 95% of the water we drink

had already been used. I drink this veg. juice for breakfast,

lunch, and sometime, but not always, dinner. I do drink some before

dinner to knock off the attack mode. I use V-8 jucice to blend it

sometimes too. I toss in a banana and other fruits sometime too. I

use lots of green baby spinich, but I don't use greens. My

experience with greens turned out a hot drink. The iceburg lettuce

has practically no nutrition, but red cabbage, carrots, beats have

deep color and they would be good. I have even used a sports drink

to blend the veg. with.

I have a friend (the one who told me about this doctor) that had

cancer and he was suppose to die in 1997. He works 12 hrs a day

now, he is in remition, and his hair is starting to grow where he

was once bald. He drinks 2 gal. a day and allows him self the

weekends off.

I've gotten use to it now, so I stay full. I never liked veg.,

especially raw, but I like my drinks, and they make pills slide down

easier too.

PS: You don't have to use salid dressing either.

I hope you dance again,

Donna

Pat,

I was diagnosed in 1999 and I was a size 8 now I look like a cow.

I was energetic person also. I can

still ride my stationary bike and do a few floor exercise. But nothing seems to

help. When I get bored I eat not because I am hungry. I did see a new weight

loss patch that is suppose to help with weight. It is a

herbal patch. I will have to check with my doctor before I get one.

Pat,

I've gained about 5 lbs since we retired last Dec and I exercise as much as

my body allows me to so I guess it's something we just have to face. I eat

less than I used to, but I can't get that needle to move down on the scale.

I guess there are worse things to deal with!

Peace and blessings,

Vivian

Pat,

The old saying is " What goes in, must be burned off. " If you are still

eating the same way you did before the PLS hit, then you will be gaining

weight and not remaining the same weight. You either have to cut down

your calories eaten or burn them off doing something physical. I know

how you feel, though. Before I was first diagnosed, I had terrible

spasms and a horrible hyper-reflex response. I didn't sleep very well,

about 10 minutes every so often. Lost over 20 pounds in two weeks. Not a

diet I would recommend to anyone, though. When I was placed on some

medication that controlled the spasms and partially controlled the

reflex response, I gained weight. What happened? I was able to eat and

my muscles weren't active. I am thankful for both, but need to use the

muscles more often and eat less. Lately, I have been using something to

help eliminate the urge to eat carbohydrates and have lost about 9

pounds in 6 weeks and am still losing. I still need to exercise

regularly, but can't seem to do it. That would help tremendously. I

guess the solution is: Eat less and exercise more. Muscle burns more

calories than fat. I miss being able to be active, probably the same as

everyone in this group.

Don't let this happen.

I noticed my husband standing on the bathroom scale,

sucking in his ample stomach.

Thinking he was trying to weigh less with this maneuver,

I quipped, " I don't think that is going to help much, hon. "

" Sure it does, " he said. " How else can I can see the

numbers? "

Cheers
