Guest guest
Wow! We just built a small half pipe in the backyard last weekend. He's been a skateboard nut since we went to last year's Xgames. My father-in-law lives in Philly, so it's been convenient to combine a visit to him and the games into a great family vacation. I don't know what we'll do next year when the location is moved. BTW-- Aubrie loves the Xgames too. She can't wait to go watch. She likes to ride X-games-style in her stroller and has tried out the halfpipe with her little Fisher-Price rollerskates. Guest guest
, That's great that Aubrie is skating. The tricycle thing will happen, Saleah was the same way. It was more that she didn't have the strength for peddeling. But she never gave up. Now she loves it. We spray her helmet with static guard (because of her implant) and she puts it's on as fast as she can and jumps on the bike and she's off. It's great. Saleah's also taken gymnastics and LOVED it... I have thought about dance, but wasn't sure what age would be good, with the hearing loss. But if Aubrie's already doing it then maybe it's time to look into it. They're just a few months apart in age. We are waiting patiently for baseball season to start so that we can sign her up for t-ball. She loves to be outside with the boys and play ball. She can actually hit it when it' s pitched to her.... I agree about having the older boys around all the time. I think it gives them more confidence and they are willing to try more cause the boys are doing it.... It's a wonderful thing isn't it... Kim mom to Devin 11yrs. and Saleah 4 yrs. Guest guest
Michele, Aubrie can use roller skates???? How's her balance? I think the lovely Fisher Price ones (solid, designed for toddlers) go up to one size smaller than Penina. These are the ones that expand over shoes, right? Maybe we'll start with ballet first.... Speaking of balance, I know that S. is an avid skier and S. has done some karate... but I was wondering about the others. What kind of physical activities do our CHARGErs like / are capable of? Thanks, Anne, mom of Penina (CHArgE, almost 6, who the special needs coordinator at day camp described as being " much more confident about her physical capabilities than the capabilities warrant " sigh.) Guest guest
Anne- Aubrie can skate with the F-P ones set on the easiest setting -- the wheels don't move. She wears all of her pads and helmet. and his friends love to get her all geared up. Then they take her out and stay with her. She does much better holding a hand or 2, but she can get around a bit on her own. She doesn't mind falling and doesn't get hurt. She's only lasted about 10 min or so at home so we haven't tried the roller rink or anything. I don't think she could handle the crowd there. We'd have to go with her and hold hands all the way around the rink -- but, really, that's quite good considering that's what you might expect with some other 4-5 yr olds. Aubrie is also learning to ride her tricycle. She can't always make it go very well. I think it's more lack of strength than lack of coordination. She likes her little car that moves with your feet on the ground. We tried a friend's little 2-wheeler with training wheels. That was a mistake! She definitely doesn't have the balance for that! She's learning to pump herself on the swing. I think she's picking it up from direct instruction and watching peers at school. I think she'll have that mastered a few months after school starts. Aubrie took a summer tumbling class for one week. Her favorite thing was somersaults. She could do them all the way down the length of the mat. The tumbling teacher is also the dance instructor (owns the studio). She offered to me to teach Aubrie private dance lessons because she found her so fascinating. She saw us in the audience at the spring recital and noticed how enthusiastic Aubrie was and how well she can keep the rhythm. Our plan is to begin with private instruction working up to being with the group in the spring so she can participate fully in the recital. I was so thrilled that the instructor approached me! Now I just have to get her called and make the arrangements -- summer is ending so suddenly! " much more confident about her physical capabilities than the capabilities warrant " -- I think this would describe Aubrie too. She's appropriately cautious, I guess. But she's got the benefit of all the big boys around her who encourage and help her to do lots of big kid stuff. Regarding dance -- Aubrie's hearing is quite good with her aids so that wasn't a consideration. I was more concerned about her ability to follow directions, motor planning skills, and large motor in general. Michele

Guest guest
Anne, Timmy is doing horse back riding, and also gymnastics--last fall he went into the 6 yr old boys class, and did ok, but was CLEARLY behind by quite a ways. so, I put him in keegan's 4-5 yr old class and he does quite well, a little more help from the coach, and easier things to do. he is going to continue this class in the fall, his balance is still bad and still can't jump, but he has rolling down, and is doing better on the bars and stretching stuff. good luck in dance class. maria, mom to timmy 7 on 8/15, keegan 4, liam 22 months, wife to pat Re: WV travel info > > > Michele, > > Aubrie can use roller skates???? > > How's her balance? > > I think the lovely Fisher Price ones (solid, designed for toddlers) go up to one size smaller than Penina. > These are the ones that expand over shoes, right? > > Maybe we'll start with ballet first.... > > > Speaking of balance, I know that S. is an avid skier and S. has done some karate... but I was > wondering about the others. He was delayed in gross motor and fine motor skills and also has some oral motor problems as well. Anyway, we have wonderful news. Just this week Danny started riding his two wheeler without the training wheels!!!!! Danny had been riding a bike with extra large training wheels for years now and we really didn't know if he would ever ride without the training wheels. His balance is still not normal, he walks with a wider base of support and looks just a little off balance when walking or running. This summer he has been doing the therapeutic horseback riding once a week and while that most likely helped I think the crucial event for him was his little (Just turned 7 this week)sister starting to ride a two wheeler. She started riding last weekend and we didn't play it up too much cause we didn't want Danny to feel bad. He didn't say too much about it but several days later when I got home from work I saw him sitting on his bike in the driveway with the training wheels off. I asked my husband what was up and he said Danny had come to him and asked him to take the training wheels off. Within 2 days he was riding on his own. We still can't believe it! It is a little scary to watch him but he wears a helmet and is proud as can be, He has been on that bike all weekend(Just in our large driveway, so far) and no spills yet. If you had asked us two weeks ago if he would ever be doing this we would have been doubtful-so just goes to show you what these determined chargers can do. Danny is lucky too in that his colobomas are very small and have minimal impact on his vision. > R. -Mom to Danny(CHaRGE)11, Alyssa 14, Beth 7, wife to Leo > Michele, > > Aubrie can use roller skates???? > > How's her balance? > > I think the lovely Fisher Price ones (solid, designed for toddlers) go up to > one size smaller than Penina. > These are the ones that expand over shoes, right? > > Maybe we'll start with ballet first.... > > > Speaking of balance, I know that S. is an avid skier and S. has > done some karate... but I was > wondering about the others.
