erika got alot of her teeth early. she was ahead of most for her age. she

is missing a lot of enamle on her front teeth, the permanet ones. she just

turned 7 and has 3 top permanet ones and the top eye tooth is no where to be

found. she also has the permanet ones on the 2 bottom. we go to the dentist

every 3-4 mos. he cleans , gives her a flouride treatment and may have to

look for the mssing eye tooth with our next visit. additionally the enamel

mssing could be aproblem for the future. he said this was probably b/c she

was premature.

Dear Anne-

, who is almost thirteen, has lost nine baby teeth so far. Of those

nine, I (with great persistence) was able to help him have one fall out (his

first) and one fell out at school. The other seven have needed the help of

the dentist. Primarily he usually has only partial root dissolution - which

means there is often a sliver of root keeping that darn baby tooth in!

goes to the dentist every six months for routine check ups. I was

being indulgently neglectful, and managed to miss the six month date, and

was almost nine months away from the dentist - apparently he now has

SEVEN overretained baby teeth in his mouth! I have been looking, and I

thought I saw only three- oh well - poor - he has shark mouth and Don

Corleone jaw. In one case, what I wondered if it could be a giant molar

coming in right beneath the baby tooth is instead the permanent tooth coming

through the baby tooth, which has now broken into three parts and is stuck

in the gum around the permanent tooth! For it is a mixture of partial

root dissolution, his tender gums tend to hold the baby teeth in, and the

way his adult teeth are coming in tend to wedge the baby tooth in. I think

the second baby tooth lost was particularly decisive. Having been

able to " help " lose the first tooth, I was firmly determined to " help "

with the second. The dentist told me that if the adult tooth was more than

half-way emerged, then extraction would be best, as most likely the root had

not completely been dissolved. We waited until the adult tooth was almost

the same height as the baby tooth- wiggling away almost as though it were

therapy. When the dentist handed me the tooth, there was a long thin root

piece still attached to the tooth that was nearly twice as long as the tooth

itself. You could clearly see the path the adult tooth took in the root of

the baby tooth. The root piece was nearly paper thin at the end, but very

firm. From this experience forward, I just look at the adult teeth

emerging, and when it looks about " halfway " in, I take to the dentist!

Our other two sons (who do not have Charge) have lost their baby teeth on

their own so far (eight each).

Hope this was of some help,

Best always,

Yuka Persico

Hi Yuka,

Thanks for sharing - it does help!

Oddly I had some dental problems (long forgotten) which required some surgical

intervention before years of

orthodontia - including two permanent molars growing into (and tangled up in)

the baby molar roots. they had

to saw the baby teeth in half and untangle the roots. I was a very brave 12 year

old!

Could this be a CHARGE thing?

Anne

Dear Anne,

Camille's baby teeth also refused to come out....happy and contented little

teeth they were. This happened with several, but only one or possibly two

teeth actually had to be pulled by the dentist to allow the new one to come

in properly.

Because this was Camille, and not Kendra, I don't know if this is a CHARGE

thing or not. There was never any real explanation other than that the

baby teeth were not ready to come out. (Fairly evident! :-) haha) Camille

does have a somewhat small jaw and did require orthodontia in high school,

but her smile is beautiful now.

Dylan's also show no signs of coming out.

My oldest was having tooth pain when he was a similar age, took him to the

dentist. He said it was because the permanent teeth were coming in and the

baby teeth hadn't fallen out. He quickly pulled the 2 teeth with a piece of

gauze, no pain, no difficulty, they just popped right out. Hopefully it

will be the same for Penina.

Ok we just went through this with in April. He had over 15 baby teeth

pulled out at one time due to them not wanting to leave their happy little home.

The doctor pulled bottom as well as top teeth. was almost 8 and had only

lost one tooth on his own. With alot of them you could see where the adult

tooth was trying to come in, Now that they are out only 2 teeth have come

totaly through. He did have some very fine roots on some of his teeth that were

pulled. He did not have any problems after they pulled them out and was eating

his regular(regular to him)dite that night. He had some blood dranage for a

couple of days but not bad at all, got all of his baby teeth early in

fact he had a full mouth full of teeth before he was 8 months old. I am not

sure if it is a charge thing or not but the doctor said he was sure it had alot

to do with his medical health. Hope this is of some help.

Hi all,

A long time ago, Penina's baby teeth grew in when they were supposed to...

Now they are so happy they refuse to leave. The two middle teeth on the bottom

has had two upper teeth extracted. One of which was a natal tooth. Both

extractors were in her cleft area. They were very sharp, irregular and

misplaced teeth. Her premaxilla is locked out and these two incisors are

somewhat irregular as well. Currently, has 7 teeth. All of which are

very small and slightly unformed. The cranial fascial surgeon is following

her dental issues to date. We predict that the dental issues are going to be

one of 's unfortunate/unlucky struggles. As her clefts are very

severe...

" In the olden days it was the custom to blame teeth for colds, diarrheas,

fevers. Of course, these conditions are caused by germs and not by teething.

However, in some babies it looks as though teething lowers resistance, making

it EASIER for an infection to start at the time. " Dr. Spock. And the

unmanageable copious secretions -- cut very few teeth the first year

(2), and was very healthy with one common cold/URI. However, the past few

months she has been working very hard at teething, and now becomes sick

easily. We have never had a suction machine in our home, and we hope not to

need one now. Perhaps the release of 's glossopexy (tongue attached to

lower lip) will allow her to strengthen her swallow and therefore improve her

health? As and I have become very anxious anticipating that day. This

now has been rescheduled for the 23rd of August.

Any other CHARGE'rs have a natal tooth / teeth?

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies about teeth. The dentist told us to give it about 10 days

and then contact to office

for an appointment. I am stalling until next week because the two bottom teeth

are getting looser -

hopefully they'll fall out by themselves (with Penina's help - all that

tooth-wiggling must do something,

right?).

Penina spent the first two weeks of summer in a daily (morning) 2-hour adapted

art-gym-swim program. She did

well, but seemed bored and restless in the afternoons. She started day camp this

Monday. She loves it. That

night she couldn't stop bubbling over! I am still not too sure about the special

needs coordinator but so

far so good. They have given Penina a companion for the first week and will see

how it goes...

Hope you are all enjoying the summer.

Regards,

Anne, mom of Penina (CHArgE, who is counting the days until the 18th when she

will be 5 years and 11 months

old!)
