House conversion about to happen!

Hello all!

We have a tri-level house. Smart, huh? Anyway, since we can't afford to move, we

decided to turn our garage into a master bed/bath and office so that we can live

mainly on one level and just shut the upstairs off. But we hope to turn the den

downstairs into a faboo home entertainment center. We just got some wonderful

gas logs installed for coziness factors.

But 's legs have been giving him serious problems these past couple of

days. I'm worried that they might not " bounce back. " It looks like we are going

to need one of those stair seat thingys that work like escalators. Anyone know

what I'm talking about? I think they call them " stair lifts. " Heck, I'd like to

have one to put my LAUNDRY baskets on they are so heavy (did I mention my

housework skills are SORELY lacking lately?)!!

Anyone know of a good vendor? And how to install.....yaddah yaddah yaddah. And

what about grant programs for us newly po' folks? Anyone ever researched that?

If not, I may do a little bit of scrounging around and I'll share any info I

find.

I too live in a tri-level house and have had stairglides installed about two

years ago at the insistence of my occupational therapist since I had such a

hard time with the stairs. It was an adjustment to get used to them and I

really disliked the idea of having to use them but now I simply wouldn't be

able to manage without them. I'm in Canada so I'm not able to provide info

on vendors etc. except you might check out the website www.bruno.com as I'm

sure one of my stairglides is made by them, they're a major supplier of

assistive devices and they're US based I'm quite sure. As far a funding, we

have what's called The Home Modification program up here through the March

of Dimes that helps to cover these costs, if you have the MOD down there you

might check with them.

I live in a two story house. My office is currently upstairs but the stairs

are very difficult for me.

Could somebody describe a stairlift to me? Don't know that I could afford it

but I can't picture how it would work. My stairs are in two sections with a

landing in between if that matters.

Thanks for all the information related to PLS/HSP that you've passed on to

this group. It has been very helpful. I do have another question that you

might be able to answer, or at least refer me on. I have a confirmed general

diagnosis of Motor Neuron Desease and I believe will have a specific

diagnosis of PLS or HSP within the next few weeks. My question is---is there

a specific strategy that I should consider when applying for disability?

Should I just follow the procedure for applying as outlined on the SSA

website?
