Yes, I did try it. I found I had breakthrough pain by noon and of course

couldn't take anything else since this is a once a day deal. Occasionally I

would take another one to try and cover the pain. Also--I had stomach upset. I

should say though that NSAID's and I don't get along at all.

S.

Mobic

Hi...

Has anyone tried Mobic as an NSAID?

April 14, 2000

RIDGEFIELD, CT, Apr 14 (Reuters) -- The US Food and Drug Administration

Thursday approved a new painkiller, Mobic, to treat osteoarthritis.

Mobic, or meloxicam, will be marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim and

Chicago-based Abbott Laboratories. The new drug would compete against GD

Searle's Celebrex and Merck's Vioxx.

Vioxx and Celebrex are part of a class of pain and arthritis drugs that

block the -2 enzyme, which is thought to cause inflammation, without

blocking the closely related -1 enzyme, which protects the stomach lining.

Mobic falls in the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or

NSAIDs, such as aspirin and other traditional painkillers. NSAIDs block

the -2 and -1 enzymes, which can cause ulcers and other

gastrointestinal problems, leading to an estimated 16,000 deaths from

such side effects in the US each year.

Mobic appeared to cause a low incidence of gastrointestinal side effects

during testing, Boehringer Ingelheim said. Boehringer Ingelheim said

that Mobic would be priced about 20% less than Celebrex and Vioxx for

the starting and maintenance daily dose of 7.5 mg. Celebrex had sales of

$1.5 billion in 1999, making it the fastest selling new drug in the

world.

Yes, Mobic is an NSAID. I took it for almost a year without any side effects

but it also didn't seem to do a thing for me. Here is some information on

its possible side effects taken directly from the manufacturer's web site:

<<The most common side effects observed during clinical trials associated

with use of MOBIC tablets are diarrhea, dyspepsia and nausea, although these

effects occurred in less than five percent of patients. Like all medications,

MOBIC tablets are not for everyone. Patients who have a known allergy to

meloxicam, aspirin, or other traditional NSAIDs should not use MOBIC tablets,

nor should women who are or may be pregnant. Although use of MOBIC tablets

shows good gastrointestinal tolerability, gastrointestinal ulcers can develop

without warning symptoms. Patients and physicians should remain alert to the

earliest signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding.

PATIENT INFORMATION ON SIDE EFFECTS MOBIC tablets, like other drugs of its

class, can cause discomfort and, rarely, more serious side effects, such as

gastrointestinal bleeding, which may result in hospitalization and even fatal

outcomes. Although serious GI tract ulcerations and bleeding can occur

without warning symptoms, patients should be alert for the signs and symptoms

of ulcerations and bleeding, and should ask for medical advice accordingly.

Patients should report to their physicians signs or symptoms of

gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, skin rash, weight gain, or edema.

Patients should also understand the warning signs and symptoms of

hepatoxicity (e.g., nausea, fatigue, lethargy, pruritus, jaundice, right

upper quadrant tenderness, and " flu-like " symptoms). If these occur, patients

should be instructed to stop therapy and seek immediate medical therapy.>>

Hope this helps you in your decision-making and that Mobic (or whatever else

you choose to take) provides you with relief.

Regards,

Kathy

Hi e,

Mobic is a NSAID. I am sorry to say that I don't have a lot of information on

it. I took it for only a few months and it did nothing for me. I moved onto

Voltaren which has helped out quite a bit.

All drugs have different effects on different people. Maybe it will work for

you!

Dear List family -

Can anyone out there tellme about Mobic?? I'm having trouble finding a

drug that helps with the arthritis w/out unacceptable side effects. My doc

has suggested Mobic, of which I have never heard. I don't even know if

it's an NSAID or a DMARD or what???

Please give me any info that you can - especially about probable side

effects. It seems like there is little in the pharmacopeia for arthritis

that doesn't damage something else in the long run.... Have I got it right

or is it just a bad day???

Thanks,

e

Jackie,

Target carries some great relaxation tapes. I recently brought their tape

entitled sleep. I love it, I can feel myself just melting into my bed in

relaxation and I am asleep within the first 2 or 3 songs!

,

I've been on Mobic for about a year, and it seems to work as well as the others

I've taken and it's easier on my stomach. I have to pay a larger copay for it

because of my insurance (they want me to take a cheaper medication.......don't

you just love insurance companies?), but it's worth every penny not to have the

stomach irritation.

Thanks for the info on the Acetaminophen. I knew it was not great, and I found a

website the other day where you can type in all your medications and find out

about drug interactions. I now have a few questions for my doctors!

As far as muscle relaxers, I'm right now trying to stay off the Flexeril (which

I have taken one every night for years), because I think it has stopped working.

I'm not taking any right now. I hadn't heard the info you gave me about the

muscle relaxers, so I will talk to my doctor before starting any again on a

regular basis. I going to see if I can try some other relaxation techniques

instead for a while and see how that goes. Anyone know of anything that has

helped?

Tamara,

My son was also put on Mobic to replace Vioxx. He has been on it for about three

weeks now. You can go on line and read some info about it. So far I am not too

impressed with it. His knees have been swelling after soccer. But I am giving it

a try.

Hope it helps McKenna.

I went from Vioxx to Naprosyn. Then I found out Naprosyn was not good to

take so my rhuemy gave me Mobic. It seems to help and it does relieve some of

G'day Donna,

My Mum is on Mobic for her arthritis. She has had to steadily increase the

dosage to get it to a manageable level.

But since she also has a sort of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it's hard to tell

if the Mobic is causing any of the tummy troubles that NSAIDs so obviously

cause in Bayly (3 weeks off Naproxen now, and still ok).

Sorry I can't be of more use to you,

I too was changed to Mobic from Celebrex. Celebrex worked very well for me,

but I started having stomach problems, and my insurance did not cover

Celebrex. Mobic is not as effective but it does make the pain tolerable - I

take

many other things too. But, I have had a rise in my weight gain, and not sure

what it was, I was blaming it on the holidays. I have been very remiss in

my monthly blood work, due to the broken leg I had, but need to get one ASAP

according to my Dr. I will keep you posted.

Be careful with MOBIC.

Both my weight and my blood pressure shot up while

taking Mobic -- both were at scary levels. I asked the

doc to change my Rx to a generic NSAID (he picked

Lodine). Within 4 months, both my weight and my blood

pressure returned to normal.

Hi!

I might be able to confirm such a reaction to Mobic. I have been on

generic Meloxicam (same stuff as Mobic) for several months at 15mg/day,

and when I had my annual medical checkup (requested by my employer) the

LDL cholesterol came out high, despite the fact that I eat pretty

healthy food.

Now I wouldn't think much of this, because doctors have been lowering

the " permitted " cholestreol levels over the years, probably for the

purpose of allowing the pharama companies to sell more statin pills. But

still the fact that I'm high on that stuff despite eating healthy food

COULD suggest that Meloxicam is involved.

I'm not overweight, but I notice in my clothing that I have gained some

weight. I supposed that's normal when one gets older...

It might be just coincidence, or it might be that Meloxicam indeed

causes this effect. I have now stopped Meloxicam and since yesterday I'm

trying Naproxen instead. I will tell you if I notice any difference, but

since I'm not getting checked up very often, that will take some time.

Manfred.

I've taken Mobic for quite a while for osteo-arthritis. It's an NSAID

(non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). My internist put me on it when I had

reactions to the old-time NSAIDS (lodine at the time - which worked well but

gave me uncontrollable gastro problems). Mobic tends to have fewer gastro

problems that the old-time NSAIDS because, as she described it to me, it is a

cross between them and the newer 2 inhibitors - two of which were pulled off

the market because they caused cardiovascular problems. Celebrex is the only

one still available. I'm on it now after having gastro problems with Mobic less

than a month after she told me to double the amount I was taking. (Put me at

the max.)

Since it's a non-steroidal, it does not work like - or as well - as prednisone;

however, it also does not have the terrible side-effects of prednisone,

especially if prednisone is taken for long periods of time. My two neices both

have anti-inflammatory diseases, are in their early 30s and have arthritis

already as a result of being on prednisone so many times to control their

ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

My internist said that Mobic begins to work right away; however, I think you

have to be on it for at least a few days to get the full results of its

anti-inflammatory properties (that was my experience, anyway.) It is not a

pain-killer but is designed to alleviate pain by reducing joint

inflammation.

For what it's worth, I had been on Enbrel for ten days and really beginning to

get good results (feeling so much better - able to get up and out of chairs more

easily, walk better, etc.) when I had to stop taking Mobic. Within 2-3 days all

my old joint pain was back.

So, my experience with Enbrel (and I've now been on it for six weeks) is that it

reduced almost back to normal the swelling that had developed in my legs and

ankles and has helped reduce the stiffness that was developing in my fingers;

but it has done little to alleviate pain. I guess it's primary job is to

prevent future damage to the joints and since I've heard nothing from my rheumy

after my first set of post-enbrel blood tests, I'm assuming my inflammation

levels are down. (They were only moderately high to begin with.)

[ ] Mobic

My rheumy had put me on Mobic to try to control the inflammation due

to PA. I took it for about 5 days with no improvement. Should Mobic

control inflammation the way Prednisone does? I'm on Prednisone now

and I'm starting to feel some relief. It's just a six day dose pack.

For those of you that use Mobic, how long do you have to take it

before you see in improvement in your inflammation? I've been taking

Vicodin for pain and it's nice to see some relief from the inflammation.

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Mobic took a good 4-6 weeks to help me. I initially took it for

plantar fasciitis pain, then was off for awhile, and then back on.

Both times it took awhile to kick in. I'm on 15 mg, as the lower dose

didn't do much.

Hi Mark,

> Should Mobic control inflammation the way Prednisone does?

Mobic is one of many brand names for Meloxicam, a semi-specific COX-2

inhibitor, so it falls into the class of non-steroidal

antiinflammatories. It has rather moderate action, and a low side-effect

profile. Prednisone instead is a steroid, with much stronger action but

also much more severe side effects.

> For those of you that use Mobic, how long do you have to take it

> before you see in improvement in your inflammation?

I notice pain relief as soon as four hours after starting it. This

allows using it on demand, rather than as long time treatment. But then,

with pain being constant, I end up taking it every day anyway.

In about two days the full effect sets in for me. This full effect is a

very significant pain reduction, specially in the spine, but no

discernible reduction of the visible swelling of my finger. This is with

a 15mg per day dosage. With 7.5mg, the effect is smaller, but still

enough to fight down light pain in the back.

I have noticed no side effects, and that's the reason why I prefer

Meloxicam over other NSAIDs. Also the generic version I use is quite

inexpensive. Several other NSAIDs are more effective but cause me

stomach trouble, tinnitus, or visual problems.

Manfred.

I have a question in relation to Mobic. I have been put on mobic while

I am waiting to go to the consulting physician. I have been feeling

sick and upset stomach ever since I started it 6 days ago. I take

nixium 40 and rani 150 (3) tabs a day. I would have thought that this

would stop any problems with my stomach. I was hoping at least I would

have a stop gap until the course of treatment is worked out. I am

allergic to prednisone so that is ruled out. It caused my throat to

swell so they are not game to give it to me again. Maybe someone can

tell me if it settles down over time. I go to the physician next

Thursday. The consulting physician has to consult with all the

doctors that have been treating me for different conditions over the

years and decide just how they will handle my future treatment. I just

hope he does not take too long.

Catch you later

Mobic is normally prescribed to those who have reactions to the typical NSAIDs

and only your doctor can answer this question but I would be surprised if it

caused your stomach upset that quickly. I have had problems with it (mine were

more intestinal, though I didn't feel good, lost my appetite, etc.) after my

rheumatologist - who didn't know my history with these kinds of drugs - told me

to double the dose I was taking and that took me up to the max.. I'm now trying

Celebrex to see if it helps, since I was reluctant at this point to go back to

Mobic even at a lower level. My experience has been that once the gastro

problems start, they continue - possibly get worse.

Have you had any history of ulcers? If so, I would probably call the doctor and

not wait until next week. A bleeding ulcer is not something to mess around

with, though if you have no history of that kind of problem I don't think they

can develop that quickly. Good luck . . ..sounds like you're between a rock and

a hard place at the moment.

Unfortunately I have had duodenal and gastric ulcers on and off for the

past 10 years. I was taking celebrex up to a few months ago but they

decided to take me off that because of the problems with my stomach. I

don't believe celebrex was contributing to any of my reflux problems.

I was taking 2 a day for several years and then after the viox scare

they reduced it back to one. I wanted to go back on celebrex but the

surgeon thought he would try mobic. As I am now getting the taste of

blood coming up I think I will stop taking it and wait until Thursday.

I don't really think there is much left for me to try for the arthritis.

Apparently methotrexate might not be the answer either as I have

adverse liver results.

I had another slight blow to day. The phone rang first thing this

morning while I was at work and it was the Breastscreen Clinic. I now

have to be at the hospital at 8.15Am for another mamogram, scan and

biopsy. I am beginning to think that it is time something started to

go right . All I really want is a rheumatologist to sort out this

arthritis so I can get on with life. I just wish it was not such a

long winded process.

I am sorry to hear of ypur bleeding problems.I can only suggest that you try

fish oils with gla. you should try this .for your arthritis. It will also lower

your cholesterol and blood pressure and help heal your ulcers. I take them with

food? and... do not just gulp them down with coffee or you will be running to

the bathroom . To avoid that fish burping after taste then keep your fish oil

pills in the freezer. THey last longer and do not digest until they get furthur

down from stomack into intestines . This way [keeping in freezer] you can buy a

large bottle of fish oil pills .?? Or you can get enteric coated fish oil . I

think you can get them at costco . It may take a while to notice some pain

relief but be patient because they ?really help .? also help with psoriasis. They

especially help me in the winter . cathy from ma

I went to my local GP today and he has told me to stop taking the mobic

I'd not heard of panadol before but it appears to be just acetominaphen, right?

If so, I could take an entire bottle and it would do nothing for me!!!! Sorry

to hear of your problems with Mobic - I've had them too and am now trying

celebrex but not sure they're not causing the same problem I had with Mobic

(more intestinal than stomach.) If your rheumatologist finds something that

works or you, please let me know! Many people I know can take mobic when they

can't take other NSAIDs but I guess a few of us are just not that lucky.

Yes Panadol is just plain paracetamol. It does not do much.

I went to consulting physician today ( which by the way I have finally

found out what they are) - They are specialist qualified in several

fields. He is a rheumatologist, gastro, haematologist, and gyny all

rolled into one. Apparently they are a dying breed here in Australia,

they are no longer being trained to have multi specialties. I found

him so easy to talk to. Can't quite believe all that I did tell him.

Anyway I have a lot of blood tests to day and I have to have ultrasound

on my abdomen and ovaries etc. I showed him all the results from my

last gastroscopy and he was quite surprised that with all the medicine

that I have been taking for reflux and gastritis as well as the surgery

that I am not getting any relief. He has ruled out going back on any

of cox 2 inhibitors. He did suggest that he may try gold tablets or

injections. Has any body been treated with this and have they had any

relief? I did feel positive after seeing him that somewhere down the

track there will be an aswer for me.

Look forward to hearing from you all Maree
