YES. That sounds scary. How old is the baby? This is a very dangerous approach

for a baby. That baby is likely to have a growth stunt, with all that it

implies, from all these restrictions for 3 wks. Has the Pediatrician seen the

baby to rule-out any organic/physiological etiologies? If it is definite that it

is colic, have they tried anti-colic products, like camomile unsweetened teas at

a warm-luke temp? Even 1 Oz warm water between meals can help. I know most MDs

here dont like to give water to babies, but sometimes you needs extra. Detox to

a n infant sounds scary to me.

Subject: Vegan needs help with colicky infant

I have a vegan mom who writes:

" We are going crazy here with our son...he isn't sleeping well and

screams/cries most of day. So I'm going to do a detox diet and see if that

helps with his Colic like behavior and spit up. I'm planning to go on a no

soy, dairy, egg, gluten free diet starting tomorrow. I'm going to go on it

for 3 full weeks and see if there is some kind of change in his behaviors.

If there is a change then I'll add back one thing at time, in hopes to find

what the cause is.

I'm trying to put together some menu ideas and would love any suggestions

you have and/or websites to look for information etc. "

Does anyone have experience with this and can offer suggestions?

thank so much!

I am confused. Is the baby Vegan also? If yes, then of course no eggs or dairy.

If the mother is Vegan and is breast feeding she is not eating anything animal.

Two of my grandchildren are being raised on a true vegetarian diet (you would

call them Vegan). The 3 yr old is in the 60th percentile for wgt and the 75th

for hgt. The 20 month old is even bigger. Neither of them are a bit chubby.

Their father is 6' 3' and their mother is 5'3 " . They have a very well balanced

diet.

They have never eaten any animal products.  They have been very healthy.

It takes a lot of discipline and education to raise kids on a vegan diet without

causing deficiencies. Your grandkids might have been lucky thanks to grandma :)

?Kids need the cholesterol, especially growing up, and without dairy, eggs and

of course all other animal sources, it is lacking. What scares me here, in this

scenario of the baby in question, is that parents are more panicky bc they are

sleep deprived and feel helpless and frustrated looking for extreme solutions

that I dont think fit in this scenario. It is very different if the child was

raised on a vegan diet from day 1, with the adequate substitution. But it sounds

to me that the baby in question was not raised vegetarian or vegan and now will

be " detoxed " . I just fear for this measure to be too extreme and inappropriate.

If there is a need to r/o food intolerance or allergies, elimination diet should

be done one item/food group at a time, not all at once, especially with babies,

but I might be wrong. Maybe its me, I dont like extreme approach, especially

when we are establishing eating habits. and again, we dont know how old is this

baby, and much more info is needed, I would say, before I would take such a

strict approach, for example:1. If the baby is breastfed - is he getting enough

breast milk? Maybe the mother, being sleep deprived and frustrated, has less

milk then she thinks she does? and he cries bc he is hungry?2. Is the baby in

process of being weaned off breast feeding? 3. Has the baby been introduced to

dairy recently (again, depends on his age) and therefore colic might have been

worsen? if so - eliminating dairy could be a good step. but only dairy.4. Is

the baby teething? ear infection? I know of one case where the baby was crying

all the time and they finally found out he had GERD. 5. Does the baby move bowel

regularly? Constipation could be very painful.Just few question on top of my

head.

I'm sure Madalyn will clarify herself, but her daughter is also an RD.

However, I can see Madalyn's influence also, and what's more, she prepares

wonderful foods for them often. :)

Digna,

Thank you for the vote of confidence.

The grandchildren in question have a mother who is an energy healer. My RD

daughter is also a true vegetarian. The 2 RD's do give their opinions, whether

requested or not, and I do cook for the children and their parents alot as they

both are busy working.

I make different bean soups, chilis, lasagne (using nutritional yeast in place

of cheese. Bean burgers  and of course lots of cookies and bars.

A wonderful source for recipes is VEGANOMICON by Moskowitz and Romero. And

sometimes VEGANS KNOW HOW TO PARTY by Berkoff.

I’ll check out the references you provided, as I tolerate meat less and less

these days, although hubby is a true carnivore as always.

You’ve always shared your wonderful menus when you’re preparing the baskets

in preparation to your g/children’s visits, and it always sounds delicious and

interesting. I’ve never really prepared food for my children and seldom for

my g/children. I just fed them so they wouldn’t go hungry w/o giving it too

much thought.

I'm sure Madalyn will clarify herself, but her daughter is also an RD.

However, I can see Madalyn's influence also, and what's more, she prepares

wonderful foods for them often. :)

Vegan needs help with colicky infant

Has mum had her B 12 tested- if she was low during pregnancy, this baby is also

low - and there are profound neurological effects.

The herbs that are safe to give baby for colic - cannot find my handout - there

was a study that confirmed both their safety and efficacy.  anyone remember?

thanks

Thank you for the comments! To correct my initial request, the mom is

lacto-ovo vegetarian and nursing her 3.5 month old infant. The baby has

significant colicky behavior. I am trying to find out more details from her

(as she only emailed me) regarding what the Pediatrician has said, etc.

Thanks again!

I completely agree with what Merav had to say.  I think more information and

investigation is needed.  Taking such extreme approaches for such a young child

may not resolve the problem at all, and in fact, could be more

harmful.  Please update what happens.  I find this very interesting.
