Don,

Wow! Two replies in 10 minutes! If you would, please, and have the time,

check for an assistive device for the visually impaired. My

father-in-law, who is 87, has recently lost his vision in one eye and

much of his vision in the other. Both were due to macular degeneration.

He also has a severe hearing impairment. His life is not unpleasant, but

he used to enjoy reading the newspaper from front to back and watching

sports on television. We have found one magnifying device, but it is

$4000 and can only be used for reading. We are looking for assistance as

I'm sure Medicaid and Medicare will not pay that amount. He had to give

up driving, which is another love of his. My wife is driving him and her

mother to Indianapolis for their appointments. Her mother has cataracts

and will be having surgery Tuesday to have them removed. She is 85. They

have both really aged in the past two years. Anyway, any help will be

appreciated.

Hi Mike.

I know all about Macular Degeneration. My Mother had it for years and years

before she died last Sept. She also loved reading and sewing. We got her

book on tape &

a machine to play them from one of the libraries in Cincinnati. Has he had

any laser

treatments? Beth

Beth,

I believe he has, but the problem is worse than first thought. His last

treatment seemed to help. It cleared up some of the blood vessels

causing the problem. He can see a little better now, but is considered

legally blind.

Mike,

Mom finally had to go into a nursing home because of congestive heart

failure. She

loved it there tho. Went to every activity they had even tho she couldn't

see. The circus, major league baseball game, crafts, etc. Before that, she

realized her sight

was much too bad so she gave up driving rather than take the risk. I know

that was hard to do - loss of independence. She really was remarkable and I

miss her so much. Beth
