Guest guest
Sharon Well...let's see... 1) At almost 400 lbs (my highest was 385 I believe), I couldn't walk, move, or do anything without pain. 2) I couldn't buy clothing without either spending a fortune ($40 for khaki pants just because they are a size 32??)--not fancy clothes! 3) I had sleep apnea that wasn't getting better 4) I was a raging diabetic and my blood sugar was rarely under control, regardless 5) I was in complete denial about the hows and whys of getting so big 6) And I was tired--all the time. Of being ridiculed, judged, criticized, feeling like crap, not being able to do simple things--just tired. I finally realized that unless/until I took control of MY life that I wouldn't make it to 40--or if I did I'd be a very unhealthy 40 yr old. Black women have a different set of opinions when it comes to being fat--most of us don't have issues with it because we believe that our men LIKE us that way. Poll after poll shows that women of color (black and latina specifically) feel that being somewhat overweight isn't a bad thing. That being said that doesn't mean that we don't understand our lifestyles are dangerous. But it's a vicious cycle and those of us who choose to go against the norm are risking a LOT. My friend Phae and I were talking yesterday about this and she said that she realized that many fat black women would see me as a " fat traitor. " Unfortunately she's more right than she knows. But that didn't deter me from deciding on health. I've been someone who's outisde the norm for a long time. WLS is just another item to add to the list!!! I want to know how they think being TRUE to yourself can make you a traitor!! We love you Alisa!!! Good for you doing what has been the right thing for you. Guest guest
Oh I got over that crap a while ago. Did it hurt? HELL YEAH IT DID. But I've realized that if someone is only going to like me because I'm fat then they really don't know the real me. I'm a smart, funny, compassionate, intelligent woman who has finally realized her own worth. I don't need/want/desire anyone in my life who can't see those things themselves--be they fat or thin!!! > *****My friendPhae and I were talking yesterday about this and she > said that sherealized that many fat black women would see me as > a " fat traitor. Guest guest
I chose gastric bypass surgery because I was too big to run after my small children and I wanted to live long enough to see them grow into adulthood.
