Guest guest
No Bill you're not nuts. I also have hyper reflexes in my legs and arms. My doctor now gets out of the way when he hits my knees. If I sneeze I have to hold on for dear life cause I have thrown my back out of whack it that bad and if someone walks into the room and I jump. My arms go up and if I have a glass in my hand forget it its all over the place. I have the spasticity in my hand and feet. If I try to loosen a jar lid my fingers cramp up or in the morning sometimes when I straighten out my big toe will go straight up. Soooooo your not nuts. Flora Brand St Pete, FL. Guest guest
Welcome Bill, Hopefully you will get a diagnosis soon. My reflexes are also very hyper. I always warn the MD to stand off to the side when they tap my knees. If not, they're likely to be airborne when my leg hits them. I don't have the type of spasticity you mentioned, but first thing in the morning, or if I am fatigued, nervous, or cold, my legs are very stiff, and kind of slowly jerk forward when I walk. My left hand and thumb especially will start to twitch for a few seconds several times a day. There's really no two people exactly the same with this disease, but we sure do have a lot of the same symptoms. Good luck, welcome, and keep the faith, Laurel Startle Reflex / Spasticity Symptoms PLS-Friends: Hi, I'm new to this group and not yet diagnosed. I do have UMN disease symptoms, such as spasticity, weakness, startle reflex (a.k.a. " The Jerks " , fasciculations/twitches, and a host of other signs/symptoms. At this point all blood work, MRIs, and an EMG have not shown any other cause for the related problems. I have a couple of specific questions related to the startle reflex and spasticity. 1) Have any of you experienced the startle reflex when the neurologist, or other examiner, conducted a reflex test? The reason I'm asking this is because when my neuro taps my knee, I almost go off the table. This does not happen every time, but has lately. 2) Could you describe your spasticity? Is it transient, i.e. come and go? For example, I can be just sitting in a chair and all of a sudden my forearm will become spastic and my hand will curl up. If I concentrate enough and give it time, it will eventually subside. This occurs in my legs as well and my toes will curl or buckle (hammer toes). Does this happen to you, or am I JPN (just plain nuts)? Thanks, Bill
Guest guest
Hi Laurel: Thanks for the info. I do understand the hyperreflex issues associated with PLS. However, the issue I am attempting to address relates to the startle reflex when the reflexes are " checked " . My whole body will " jerk " . The hyperreflex on the specific extremity being examined will not be observed because my entire body will react. I associate this with the starle reflex, but I think my neuro (he's new for me and has only done a very brief exam prior to ordering all the tests)attributes this to 'pyschosomatic' issues - yes, I know most of us have heard that term used for us when the docs see something " outside the box " . He concluded my " jerks " showed I was not " cooperating " and he could not differentiate between the true neurological issues and the " pyschosomatic " ones. I'm just curious if those of you with starle reflex have experienced this when your reflexes are checked, not just when the phone rings, or whn you drop something unexpectedly. Thanks, Bill > Welcome Bill, > Hopefully you will get a diagnosis soon. > My reflexes are also very hyper. I always warn > the MD to stand off to the side when they > tap my knees. Guest guest
Hi Bill, My name is Donna and my neuro (a man) is afraid to stand close when he taps my knee. It almost extends straight up. I get cramps, and I twitch constantly. It feels like tiny people are dancing all over my body. Best of luck with your dx, Donna > PLS-Friends: > > Hi, I'm new to this group and not yet diagnosed. Guest guest
Bill sometime at night when I get completely relaxed I will have a reflex like you mentioned. Guest guest
Bill, You're just plain nuts. Actually, the startle reflex is something many of us have in common. Mine used to be so bad that any noise would make me fall if I were standing. If I were sitting and holding an open cup of coffee or other liquid, it would go in all directions. That has gotten much better. Now I hardly show any reflex movement when my neuro hits my knee. I don't know if this is good or bad, but will ask him later. I have the " hammer toe. " It makes it difficult to walk sometimes, but I do massage my toes daily and stretch them to keep them from becoming permanently spastic. So far it has worked. I have also found a spot just below the toes in the middle of the foot that, when pressure is applied, will make all of the toes relax. It is an amazing phenomenon. My wife will press it and can actually see my toes straighten. It lasts for a little while, then they get tight again. But it sure feels good while it lasts. I can concentrate and relax them, too, like you do with your hand. I don't have upper extremity involvement so far, but there are some beginning signs that this may be occurring. I certainly hope not. The spasticity is always there, but is controlled by the meds I take. I am on 20mg of baclofen 4X/day, Zanaflex 4mg 4X/day and Klonopin 7 mg per day taken at different doses of 1 to 3 mg at a time. I am an oddball because I seem to be one of the few in this group who can tolerate either of the first two, let alone both of them. the Klonopin is an anti-seizure medication to help with the paroxysmal spasms I have had. It is also a muscle relaxer and an anti-anxiety agent. I can drive, but probably can't operate any other heavy machinery, such as 747's. I can tell when I need the medication. I begin to feel tight all over my lower extremities and my neck gets stiff. I used to be able to miss a dose and not even feel it, but no more. That changed about 3 months ago. Considering I have been taking these things for most of the past 7 years and only 3 months ago required an increase in the baclofen, I guess I have no complaints. One last thing about the spasticity: Sometimes at the end of the day, my calf muscles are very sore to the touch. I massage them to loosen them up. This is not an everyday occurrence, though. Hang in there and welcome to the group. There is more information here than you can get from most neurologists and it is all helpful.
