I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a

professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to

planning and moving on it.

Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It

would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The

idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the

association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects

and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication

is key.

some thoughts...

other professional groups do use the word academy. For example - American

Academy of Pediatrics and Academy for Eating Disorders.

The Society for Nutrition Education (SNE) is proposing changing the name of that

organization and recently the membership was asked to vote on the name change.

I wonder why ADA did not ask us to vote? I know SNE is much smaller - but they

just sent out a web based survey that cost nothing

I also wonder how the name of JADA will be affected? will they change the

journal name too?

As I recall the membership was surveyed about a name change a year or so ago. I

don't think that the proposed name change AND was included.

The definition of ACADEMY .quoted in the announcement is the 3rd definition in

I agree with those who have stated their disappointment  that AMERICAN has not

Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

hi, Jan,

I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't

part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote

from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers

voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the

governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but

don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. What about the

Fellows of the American Dietetic Association, a designation no longer available.

Do they become former FADAs? Raphaela

Raphaela

One only needs ADA/AND approval for DPGs within ADA/AND. If one wants to form an

association, the process (involved and not easy) has nothing to do with ADA/AND,

just as the DMA, now nutrition and food service professionals did not need ADA

(not AND at the time) to approve. Licensing does not need ADA/AND approval but

as an association provided support and comments. And,(not AND) does not approve

this particular EML. So far no one who belongs to DHCC has chosen to comment yet

but that is the EML that ADA/AND has some control over as a moderator.

yes, it is what it is and feels like the discussion about the DMA name change. I

know of thousands of excellent RDs who seem to practice just fine w/o being

members of any professional society, choosing to not spend $$$. I know few

nurses who belong to American Nurses Association so it does come down to the

value a practitioner places on any particular organization. The article that

says " ADA needs to change more than its name " speaks to the survival of the

association, not so much the profession. Raphaela

Unfortunately, the more degrees and qualifications tends to put us out of the

market. We, RDs, are already looked at as elitist and considered unaffordable.

RDs are constantly called upon to give away our expertise in the name of the

good of the establishment or company for which we might be employed. I have a

master's degree which I seldom mention to prospective employers or clients.

Doesn't matter to them. What matters to them is the RD which consumers equate to

RN.

Dietitian doesn't mean anything either. Consumers think anybody working with

food is a dietitian. I can only say again that one needn't be a member of the

Academy to be an RD. Survival of the Academy lies in the perception of value of

the AND by prospective members who support it. Raphaela Rozanski, MS, RD, LDN

The requirement to be a member of the national organization to join any DPG or

the state organization has always bugged me. No other professional organization

is set up that way. But I am willing to bet that if they allowed membership by

non-members to these groups, even more members would drop out of the national

organization (regardless of its name) than already have. Just another example of

the the self serving interest of the national organization, no matter what it is

called.

But we don't pay extra for state dues - that is covered by national. I belong

to 6 professional organizations. I have to say that to be a part of nay of the

sub practice groups, you need to belong to the parent organization. Some of

them allow you to join state but not national - but you have to PAY the state.

American Public Health and Ohio Public Health together can be quite costly!

I guess that would be an option for some people in some groups, however,

belonging to state does not have many benefits - you can't go to national

meetings as a member, you do not get a journal or have access to the journal,

etc

or the state organization has always bugged me. No other professional

organization is set up that way. But I am willing to bet that if they allowed

membership by non-members to these groups, even more members would drop out of

the national organization (regardless of its name) than already have. Just
