Submucous cleft

Hi All,

I know this has been discussed before but I've forgotten. Can anyone tell me

how they actually diagnose submucous cleft palate ? Jack's speech is quite

strange and can be quite nasally(sp?). He did see a ENT Dr who just looked in

his mouth and said that he didn't have this but now the Oral Surgeon at our

local hospital has said that this is a possibility and that it could not be

detected by just looking at the back of the mouth/throat. We are seeing him

in June and will find out more then but just wondered what experience you

have of this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Elaine,

I don't know how they are supposed to find it, we had ask about this for

about a year on my daughter and it was not found until they went in to do

another surgery. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...

Hi, had submucous cleft too, I can't remember exactly how they

diagnosed this, but they told us about it when he was doing

pre-tonsillectomy thing. I think ENT saw it somehow. good luck, Barbra M

As I understand it, a submucous cleft is where the muscles didn't come

together in the soft palate. Everyone has a hard palate (the bony part

on the roof of the mouth), and a soft palate just in front of the

uvula (that thing that hangs down in the back of your throat). Even

though the soft palate looks normal on the outside, the underlying

muscles may still be cleft. I've heard that this may be suspect if the

uvula has a notch in it. Also, submucous clefts can cause a lot of

middle ear infections. My son does not have a cleft palate, but a high

palate, so I don't really have any experience in this, but this is

what I've been told. Let me know if I'm mistaken! :)

Everyone,

Thanks so much for your replies on this. I don't know if Jack does have this

but he certainly has some strange speech .

I think they can diagnose it with either videofluroscopy or nasendoscopy

(sp?). With the videofluroscopy they get the child to speak and take x-rays

to see what the palate is doing during speech. So I've been told anyway by

another mum who's wee boy is being checked for submucous cleft.

Jack sees the oral surgeon and orthodontist in june so I'll keep you posted.

I believe there might be variations of a submucus cleft. Patty has one. It

is small so there is little problem with it. It is where the palate bone on

the roof of her mouth did not close properly so there is a small hole. This

is covered by though by what I call the skin in her mough. They diagnosed it

by feeling it with their finger when she was a baby. At that time when Patty

would drink from a bottle it would go up the palate and come back out her

nose. Her palate is also high and she has a short soft palate. The soft

palate is in the back of the throat and moves for swallowing and in making

sounds. Along with that her uvula, which is the dangly thing in the back of

the throat, is split. This has nothing to do with anything for her they

said.

When she was a baby we were told she would never talk. Well, they

were wrong. The thing that causes problems is because of these her

eustachian tube does not function properly and she struggles even today with

ear infections and fluids. Otherwise, it now makes little difference in her

life.
