Can't remember exactly. It's amytriptiline and I've seen more than one post

and research study saying it has some potential negative side affects. I

can't remember the potential side affects but they were enough to get me off

the stuff which I don't think I really needed anyway. It helps with sleep

and I have no sleep problems as long as I take Somatomed. Someone else will

probably remember. Steve B.

CFSResearch had posting today of research indicating that Elavil and

tricyclic antidepressants cause reduction in NK cells. Glad I'm off this

drug. Steve B.

I noticed the study posted on CFSresearch did not state the dosage amount.

The normal dosage for treatment of depression is 150mg, while most people

with CFS are only taking 10-25 mg.

Also, doesn't Cheney still recommend Elavil to his patients?

Either way, I only took half a pill last night to start weening off of it. I

fell asleep the same time I usually do, so I'm wondering if I even needed to

take it all these years.

Phil,

Sorry, don't know if Paxil is from same group drugs as Elavil. I have

noticed that I have had more difficulty getting a full nights sleep since

going off the Elavil. I have solved this problem, at least for now, by

taking 2-3 (vs. 1 previously) Seacure pills along with my Klonopin, Lemon

Balm/Valerian Root combo, and Somatomed. Seacure really improves my sleep.

I don't take it during the day or I become drowsy. Steve B.

Has anyone heard about elavil causing osteoporosis? Sorry if I have asked

this before, brain fog is terrible. I may have dreamed this, but if there is

something out there about it, could you lead me to it?

Thanks, Dianne

Elavil (aka amitriptyline) was like a miracle drug for

me too. I didn't even realize how badly I was sleeping

until I was finally sleeping good, and the relief from

the muscle spasms was as close to pain free as I had

been in years. To prevent the morning grogginess I

would take it at least 12 hours before you need to get

up though....

NOW you tell me! hahahhhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Yeah I kinda figured that one out :)

But I sure as hell do feel better! I even feel like DOING something besides

laying on the couch to recouperate after work! But I'm pacing myself. Too

easy to do too much.

And I dunno what is gonna happen with my job. Part of me hopes they make me

perm, about 95%, but about 5% doesn't want to even bother with working, ya

know. My contract is up end of Sept. So we'll see.

In the meantime, I be makin' money lol and spending it!

Thats why I stopped it. It can make you groggy if you dont take it at night and it can make you hungry and constipated. It totally got rid of my panic and anxiety and migraines though. Suz

I assume that those of you taking Elavil for pain relief find that it helps

because you are able to sleep better at night and getting a significant amount

of rest helps to relieve the pain. At least that is the theory behind

prescribing this drug for fibromyalgia patients. Even though Elavil helped me

to sleep, it also caused weight gain and weird dreams for me. My doctor

switched me to 2.5 mg of Zyprexa, and I have found that it works much better

than Elavil. If anyone is having problems with Elavil, you might want to

suggest a trial of Zyprexa. My doctor has been using it successfully with his

fibromyalgia patients.

I only have to take 10mgs at night-right before bedtime. It is not

addictive. I have been taking it for two years and I haven't had to increase

it. It

doesn't take away the daytime pain but at least I can sleep at night. It does

dry the eyes and mouth which can be very annoying. I hope it works for you.

Hummmm, with all I read on the group, i wonder if I want to start any

medication, it seems that i have a mild case of PA, and nothing else no fibro,

no mio, no nothing.... My doc wnats to put me on MTX and/or embrel. Does it

mean that I will need all those other drugs (Paxl, zoloft??? Elavil) because I

will be on MTX?

I mean is there anyone that has a " good time " ?

I wonder?

[ ] ELAVIL

Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried Elavil and had any success with it?

My rheumy decided to give it a try since I suffer from

very bad insomnia and the SSRI's(paxil, zoloft

etc.)kept me awake, and she said Elavil is very

sedating similar to a sleeping pill without the

addiction. She also said it can help quite a bit with

the pain from Pa, Fibro, myofascial. Has anyone had

any good long lasting results with Elavil in the

treatment of the pain, sleep problems, and

depression?. Also, what are the major side effects

from this medication?

Thank you very much,

Mike

Editors Note: The major side effect that was one that I could not

tolerate unfortunately is: extremely dry mouth. There is no getting

around it. If you suffer with Sjogrens, it is intensified.

Many people also have problems with constipation, but can ad

fiber to their routine to take care of that problem. I do hope you

do not have Sjogrens, so that you can give the Elavil a go!

Yes, I have taken elavil in very low doses off and on for pain and sleep issues.

It works very well. The side effects are slight sedation until you get used to

it, dry mouth, and it can sometimes give you nightmares. I had a good effect

from 20 mg/night taken at about 8 pm.

I've been on MTX for a good many years now with no problem. My

PA is not mild by a long shot, but I've done well on it. You DO want

to start some medication...control it now before it gets worse.

>

> Hi

No-just because you try Metho doesn't mean you will end up on all

these other medications as well. It does seem excessive sometimes-

they give one med to counteract another,etc.etc. These meds are not

perfect. Some work for one person and not another. Almost all have

side effects that hopefully can be watched for and minimized. There

are some people in the group having luck with diet, excersice, etc or a

combination of meds and the other. Don't think anyone is having a

good time of it but some people have a much easier time of it than

others. I seem to be unfortunate with side effects and meds but I

have a friend with RA who can take the same meds and do just fine.

Only you can decide which treatments you want to try. Weigh the

impact PA has on your life with the risks and possible side effects

of meds. Also be aware that PA can be a progressive, destructive

disease-this also varies a lot among people. Good Luck!

Hi All,

I take Elavil ( amitriptyline )75mg every night. It was prescribed to me to

stop the pain in the bladder xcaused by Interstitial Cystitis. It used to be

given as an antidepressant but they have found that it stops the pain in the

bladder. I also have RA although it has helped me a lot with the bladder I

do not notice any difference in the RA pain.

Yes Trudy... I'm on it for Fibro... but it is an anti-depressant as well. Just a small dosage knocks the Fibro symptoms right out of me. And boy can I feel it come back when I forget to take the sucker! Talk to your Doc about that one... Maybe you can do the Celexa / Elavil combo. I'm doing it.Hugs,Teri From: Trudy <trudykinsey@...>Hcv < >Sent: Sun, July 18, 2010 11:57:19 PMSubject: [ ] Elavil

Did someone say that Elavil is an anti dep AND for Fibro AND somewhat liver-friendly ??
