Don't equate professional society membership with licensure. Please take a few

minutes and discern the difference for yourself. I will say that I am a proud

member of Sigma Tau, the honor society of nursing. That's right. They let me in.

I qualified based on the GPA I've earned in my clinical informatics MS program

through the school of nursing at the University of Washington. I'm thankful that

I am not a nurse. I have no plans to become a nurse. But they let me in because

they recognize the benefits we all get from interprofessional collaboration and

because I am not a Registered Nurse. I also belong to the American Medical

Informatics Association (and also sit on their education committee). Note, I am

American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). ASPEN is a bit

different because they were interdisciplinary from the start. But they welcome

each of the professions; none are hiding from each other in fear that someone

will take their " stuff " .

As for licensure, it's primary purpose is not inward focus on the RD. It's there

Licensure requires a CDR (our credential), not ADA membership (professional

society).

All licensed dietitians in Nevada will be required to have their CDR but do not

have to be members of ADA.

Licensure requires a CDR (our credential), not ADA membership (professional

society).

All licensed dietitians in Nevada will be required to have their CDR but do not

have to be members of ADA.

With licensure spreading through the country, I just can't help but

wonder why we would allow non-dietitians inside ADA....? I guess then we

can give MORE of our services to others.

Hm; could NOT help but go there...

Hi ,

Don't confuse " non-licensed " with non-RDs.

Many states do not have licensure (including the only 2 states I've ever

lived in as an RD) - yet we're ADA members.

I'm mixed on the non-RD membership to ADA. One, it will bring in more money

and maybe we can dump the sponsorship from companies like Pepsi. But,

sadly, the organic farmers don't have the big bucks.

Another reason for RDs to join ADA. If members don't join, the price goes

up for everybody else.

It IS my understanding that the AMA has non-MD categories of membership,

but ALSO, many MDs do NOT join the AMA.

that there are RDs in states still trying!
