I qualified based on the GPA I've earned in my clinical informatics MS program through the school of nursing at the University of Washington. I'm thankful that those nurses let me in. I am not a nurse. I have no plans to become a nurse. But they let me in because they recognize the benefits we all get from interprofessional collaboration and communication. They know that I won't be a danger to the nursing profession because I am not a Registered Nurse. I also belong to the American Medical Informatics Association (and also sit on their education committee). Note, I am not an MD and have no plans to practice as an MD. Finally, I belong to the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN). ASPEN is a bit different because they were interdisciplinary from the start. But they welcome each of the professions; none are hiding from each other in fear that someone will take their " stuff " . As for licensure, it's primary purpose is not inward focus on the RD. It's there to protect the public. I would urge you to contact your Affiliate officers who have most likely been working diligently on licensure issues. Share your concerns and educate yourself. Many states do not have licensure (including the only 2 states I've ever lived in as an RD) - yet we're ADA members. I'm mixed on the non-RD membership to ADA. One, it will bring in more money and maybe we can dump the sponsorship from companies like Pepsi. But, sadly, the organic farmers don't have the big bucks. Another reason for RDs to join ADA. If members don't join, the price goes up for everybody else. It IS my understanding that the AMA has non-MD categories of membership, but ALSO, many MDs do NOT join the AMA.
