India World AIDS Day Special.

UNAIDS- Red Ribbon: Celebrating Heroes of HIV Resilience

UNAIDS in collaboration with India is mobilising popular

support for a sign-in support programme that will be generated into a

giant UNAIDS- Red Ribbon.

As the leading advocate for worldwide action against HIV/AIDS, the

global mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an

expanded response to the epidemic.

To further this global mandate, the UNAIDS India office, in

collaboration with key partners, is positioning the World AIDS Day

event as a national platform for showcasing the commitment of civil

society agencies and individuals and to recognise and award

contributions to the strengthening of response to the AIDS epidemic

in India.

Specifically, in commemoration of 20 years of national efforts to

halt and reverse the HIV epidemic in India, the UNAIDS country

office, in collaboration with SAATHI, an NGO working for

strengthening community responses for fighting HIV, is organising an

Academy Awards-scale event. The event will recognise and award NGOs,

CBOs, PLHA Networks and community and opinion leaders who have made

an exceptional contribution towards strengthening the AIDS response

in the country.

This event will act as a platform for projecting HIV prevention

messages to a nationwide audience in a media-driven programme— a

judicious mix of awards, messages, celebrities, song, drama and

entertainment—with the overarching objective of showcasing excellence

in human and community endeavor in creating HIV resilience at the

community level.

The event will be held on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2006 at the

Hamsadhwani Amphitheatre, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

This is not an annual event, and the awards ceremony is positioned as

a one-time platform to consolidate the exceptional participation and

contribution of the civil society organizations and to acknowledge

and reward them in a befitting manner.

The highlight of the day will be the special Red Ribbon generated

through a sign-in programme. The giant UNAIDS- Red Ribbon

will be displayed at the New Delhi Awards ceremony.
