Guest guest Posted July 11, 2002 Report Share Posted July 11, 2002 i'm betting that most of us here are either going, or have gone, thru what you're experiencing. lots of folk lurk, but those of us that are chatterers can tell you that we're all the same. some of us (wendy comes to mind here) have lots of other problems, so diabetes is the least of their worries. it's my only health problem (except for high BP), but i'm having difficulty accepting it. yep, i'm scared to death of needles, but pricking seems easier than taking insulin. i'm on glucotrol, but i'm guessing when my BP gets under control, and i lost 30 lbs. or so (about half what i need to lose), my BS will be closer to normal. right now, i'm up and down. when i got up today, it was 152; just now it was 73. and i had breakfast, exercised out in the yard some and that was it. no clue why it was such a difference. i think you'll get lots of feedback on monitors. i just got insurance (just didn't have the $$$ for a while), and did not include meds or doctors. and since i got it after the diabetes diagnosis, i'm not sure whether they would allow me to cover the meds or strips. i found my little AccuCheck (i think it was 'advantage', but it was only for fingers, and i found it REALLY hurt) was recommended by lots of folks on one list, but i would absolutely not recommend it if you hate pain. that's why i stopped testing. try to get one that tests on the arm or leg. you'll find you will test when you should. also, vicki i think recommended getting a kitchen timer to remind you to test 1 and 2 hours after eating. i forget, and actually, one came in a package i just ordered as a freebie. of course, it's digital and came with a manual. lol i pray something will be invented one day that won't need a manual. pat (finding reading manuals with blurry eyes is not easy) > edle phobia, it encourages > me. Insurance will usually cover monitors, just have your doc write a prescription for it...also have him/her write prescription for more strips than you think you'll need, that way they may get covered too. I go through 300 a month but I'm a Frequent Tester...200 a month will do nicely, probably. I know, I've been " missing in action " most of the time since my surgery on May 7. As most of you know, I've been having some major health problems because of highly elevated liver enzymes. I just got a call a couple of days ago and everything is back to normal again. I am convinced that God has heard our prayers again and spared my life once more. Thank goodness I'm beginning to feel like a person again. I can even eat a meal without " up-chucking " now. I'm still very tired though and things that used to take an hour to do take at least a half a day. ( I know, I know, the subject was " Monitors " . Well, it still is! My diabetes doctor GAVE ME a brand new Accu-Chek Complete, which is actually a miniature computer. Yes, she gave it to me. She also gave me several different applications to various pharmaceutical companies who will assist senior citizens with their meds who are below a certain income level. For instance, Eli Lilley will furnish a full months supply of insulin for $12.00 per month. (I just received my card). I've seen people of all ages coming out of her office with various kinds of glucometers (so it's not limited to seniors) but her nurses use the Accu Chek. They are evidently very accurate and you can also purchase the software and cable from Roche. I didn't buy the " extra's because every time that I have an appointment with her they hook my glucometer up and run the graphs and all of the extras so I can't see spending my " pennies " on something they're going to furnish anyway. I've noticed a lot of new names and it looks like I'll have to put all of these posts on a Zip disc 'cause I haven't been able to catch up. There's so many on here now that I've used up all of my free space and having to delete like a mad woman. I get at least three offers for a free meter every year! Last year, I got two offers for a free AtLast meter, one of which I finally took. Now that the AtLast is being discontinued, they've sent me another free AccuChek meter. I've got 3 meters of my own, and gave one to my husband (when he finally admitted that he has " some blood sugar problems " ). I guess my name is on someone's list.
