Making a decision

I had to call my rheumy yesterday, hoping to be able to get in sometime next week (I haven't been feeling too well and just really needed a professional to let me know whether I should worry or not). I was really surprised, my next appointment was March 25 and I didn't know how soon they would be able to see me. They took my name and got back to me telling me I could see him today. Anyway, I did - everything is ok (or as ok as it can get), but I have a decision to make. This is someone new I've been seeing since November and I do like him. He answers all questions, doesn't use too many medical terms, or at least makes sure I understand when he does. He takes his time and asks me about not only about my physical problems, but whether I think I'm handling everything ok. He's also associated with Wood University Hospital, where I really wanted to "get in". Well, he told me he's leaving, opening a private practice and of course it is up to me whether I choose to see another doctor there or follow up with him at the new place.

I don't know what to do. I feel real comfortable with him. Should I try another rheumy there for comparison and see what happens - I really did hear very good things about most of the rheumys at that hospital. I know you guys can't tell me what to do either, but I should would like to hear what you think.

Mojo, gee I dont know what to tell you, but I have noticed that alot of

people on the list have sure had a hard time finding a dr they like. You do

have a valid point there, you could try someone else and then follow him

later if you dont like the other dr. Sorry to be of no help!

Thank you Deanna,

I actually think your friend Kerry is the one that recommended this clinic

to me a while ago when I asked about good rheumys in my area. I'll write her

and see what she thinks. I believe she had to do with a couple of doctors

there, but one of them is the head of the department and almost impossible

to see. Maybe he'll take me since this one is leaving.

I did all that.

It would pretty much be the same distance just in a different direction.

When I asked him about insurance, he said don't worry about it. I gather

since he's opening his own practice, he probably wants as many patients to

start with that he's willing to sign up with different insurance companies

and the one I have is generally accepted everywhere. He will no longer be at

this hospital, which is a big draw back for me - I really felt safe finally

having a good hospital within a short distance I could go to where someone

knows me. All my doctors so far have been in New York. I do get great care

there, but in an emergency I want something where I can get fast, not get

stuck in traffic for three hours. Last October I had to rush to the closest

hospital for pancreatitis and that stay was a nightmare. 4 days of strange

doctors who had no clue what they were doing, but would not take the time to

pick up the phone and call my doctors in New York. What is wrong with them?

It got to a point, where I told them I was not being treated at this

hospital and would leave because all they were doing was wasting my time.

That got their attention. Now they're sending me a bill for $650.00, the

insurance said they charged over the customary allowance and I am fighting

them on it.

That's one of the reasons it is so important for me to make the right

decisions. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll think about it and see what I

can find out about the other doctors at the division there.
