susie. i'm reading and saving all your emails. gonna try to answer a few

all in one (and i'll forget some).

i now have a website, and it's No. 1 on the yahoo. i think now i just need

to create new stuff and add it; get to the orders i have; and concentrate on

me. i've told brother and the rest that i will give myself a year now.

that will get me thru christmas, and give me some more time to recoup from

losing mom.

i'm keeping a journal, but not like you suggested. i think adding the

stress stuff, or moping feeling, or whatever, will help. it will give me

insight into why i feel this way (sluggish), and maybe help.

i got an email from another list member who suggested i not read Dr. Phil.

I know there are some motivational books out there, and maybe i will start wit

h one that is not as abrasive or judgmental as Dr. Phil. and i think

someone else suggested that you write down all the good things about

yourself, so i may even do that (that' a tough one for me).

as far as ordering stuff: i think i need that crutch right now. i'm not

saying i'm special or different from anyone on here, but for me personally, i

need that little support system of some snacks to start off with. i may

find that later on, they are not necessary, but for the next few weeks, i

think just knowing they are there would be good

one major problem with me is getting out. and trust me on this one. when

i quit a " real " job 15 years ago to help mom take care of dad, i was

thrilled. i hated dealing with coworkers (and the feeling was mutual) and i

found dealing with myself easier. lol i know that i miss people, so i'm

trying to figure out something that would get me out of the house some (not

walking), and being able to chat some with " real " people, and not emails, but

at the same time not be something like a job (i have absolutely no clothes

and the thought of purchasing my tent-size stuff makes me shiver).

so, to end another long email, i'm gonna try to get myself going this week.

i'm working on tons of orders that have backed up on me. and i'm gonna try

to list my game plan for what i want to see me do with my life, and then do

it.

and i'm gonna try to tell myself that playing dominoes or solitaire on pogo

is nice after i finish a day's work, but i can't have all day long to sleep,

play and do nothing any longer. i've had two months to get some sleep and

energy back, grieve, relax, and vacation. and now, it's back to realiity.

Hi Pat,

I volunteer at the hospital and I really enjoy it. I highly recommend

volunteering just because it gets you out there with people and yet it is not

a big deal if you call off. You get the good parts of having a job without

the bad parts. What job do you know of where people thank you for coming in,

thank you for your help and are really nice to you so you will keep coming

back. By the way what is your website address, I'd like to take a look at

your baskets. :)

By the way, I agree Dr, Phil is very into blaming, I don't like his style at

all, very negative. But that is just me.

sarah. i had not thought about it, but when it was pointed out to me

privately, i realized that Dr. Phil had no sympathy for " fatties " --something

i find from family and neighbors. i tried to decide when was the moment i

turned to food and what started it. i'm not really sure. i was an ugly kid

with glasses, adopted, and flat as a bean pole. i was put in a private

school, and was never a cheerleader, sorority girl or any of that stuff.

that baggage carried over, and there were some very unsuccessful romantic

endeavors. who knows. and for lots of us, it is the excuse for failing in

life. or for not being what others call successful. i know there are some

books that say " hey, you're worthy; you're ok; screw Dr. Phil " , and ithink

i'm gonna opt for one of those. i have enough finger pointers. lol

and my site is www.basketsbypat.com and i'm trying to find some healthy

recipes to include. i had a computer crash a while back (prior to diabetes)

and had to unload one section of recipes. i unloaded my " healthy " file

because i didn't need them. lol but i saved the desserts. now the

desserts are stored on floppies, and i'm trying to recoup some of the healthy

stuff. pat

oh, and i'm gonna try volunteering. hospital was suggested, but i spent so

much time there when mom was sick that i actually got to know most of the

doctors. each time we went there, brother was amazed that i would see

someone i knew walking down the hall, in the dining room, wherever, and i

guess i just don't want to get back to the hospital any time soon. or the

nursing home. but i'm thinking of the humane society, or doing rescue for

animals, or our visitor's bureau, or something. just need to figure out

what i really want to do that does not bring back the last year or so. pat

christy, i think brother is right some. i'm not lazy, but i don't like to

exercise and am not active. weaving moves my arms, and i get up to take the

stuff back and forth, but it' not real exercise. and sitting at the

computer works my fingers only. and the sitters told me they were amazed at

how little i ate during the day. mom (who weighed 100 lbs less) ate twice

what i did for breakfast, and we ate about the same (me a little less) at the

other meals. and i really don't snack that much any more. but when i do

snack, it's loaded with sugar/calories. i know before when i actually

exercised, i dropped weight like crazy. and when i ate propery, i felt

better and everything settled down. and i realize that it's now totally up

to me. pat

Pat, have you considered that you are overweight because you were

insulin resistant and are diabetic, and not the other way around?

Exercise not only burns calories, it helps type 2s improve insulin

use, thus helping with blood sugar control.

well, my paypal funds finally came thru (whew). i'm getting some of the

little candies (looks like about a bite) and a few bars; shakes; the

JustCheese; and some bread. i'm gonna try all the things recommended, and

then decide which ones i like. i tried Atkins bars at the pharmacy, and

they were cardboard. so i need to make sure the Ross and others work for

me. if not, then i'll resort to radishes, celery and that stuff.

it's funny. i always wondered why some things happened, and i knew mom's

ordeal was for a reason. i'm now thinking that it actually helped me with

some of my diet habits, because i stopped making my daily scones, muffins and

coffeecakes. now i don't really want to take the time to sift, measure,

etc., and i know that it's not good, so why do it?

i told myself last nite when i went for my " emergency " ice cream that i

really didn't want it; it was just a habit. i'm gonna order some of the ice

cream in low-carb, but i really think with the help of the friends here, and

getting busy, and just working on myself, i'll be able to handle this without

all the crutches. pat (thanks vicki)

If you're a pet lover (and it sounds like you are), there is very little that is

more rewarding than working in pet rescue and adoption. All the warm furry hugs

and snuggles and kisses

definitely reduce my carb cravings!

And don't feel guilty about using the low-carb goodies as a crutch. I know

myself too well to believe that I could just cold turkey the goodies and be able

to stick to low carb for very

long. I don't consider the shakes a goodie, anyway - it's a very healthy way

for me to get a low-carb, high protein breakfast on days when I don't feel like

eggs or leftovers. (BTW, my

favorite is the Life Extension Foundation Enhanced Life Extension Whey Protein

in vanilla; I add cocoa, instant decaf coffee, cream, neufchatel, Da Vinci syrup

or Splenda, and lots of

ice. Yum!) And I feel that having a good stockpile of low-carb chocolate bars

around really helps me avoid the high carb snacks even if everyone else around

me is eating them. And

it's kept me from going out for ice cream many an evening!

Those low-carb chocolate bars are full of fat, however, and also can give you

gas and diarrhea if you eat too much (from the maltilol). My favorite

non-chocolate dessert is to put 1/2 c

ricotta, cottage cheese, or yoghurt in a bowl, mix in Da Vinci sugarfree syrup

(favorites are Cookie Dough and Strawberry), and top with chopped nuts and

sometimes Protein Crunch cereal

(another low-carb goodie I consider essential to keep around). Sometimes I'll

have a big bowl as a breakfast or lunch, and include both cottage cheese and

yogurt, and both nuts and

Protein Crunch. It feels like eating an ice cream sundae, satisfies the

sweet-creamy-crunchy urges, and is actually good for you!

One thing I heard that helped me, is to move all your dessert sweets (including

the low-carb ones) to mealtimes. Sit down with a cup of decaf after dinner and

savor that dark low-carb

chocolate bar, rather than munching mindlessly in front of the TV or while

caught up in a novel.

I found it also really helps if you adopt the mindset that eating is at meals,

and only water and zero-carb beverages in between. If you really get hungry

(i.e., you drink a big glass

of water, wait ten minutes, are still hungry, AND it's been at least 2 hours

since your last meal), eat a " mini-meal " that includes protein and at least one

other food; e.g., instead of

trying to quell the munchies with celery and dip, eat 2-3 ounces of string

cheese first, or a large handful of almonds, then do the celery and dip. You'll

end up with a better balance

of food, and satisfy the munchies better.

Hope this helps! Hang in there, kiddo, we're rooting for you.

Now that I gave in and got Splenda, I made a great dessert for lunch today

;-) 1/3 pkg. cream cheese, a bunch of cream, some vanilla, a peach and

handful of almonds. Beat up the cream cheese and cream. Add vanilla and

Splenda, fold in a diced up fresh peach and a handful of sliced almonds. My

bg was 96 after a HUGE chef's salad and that ;-) Mmmmmmm.......

strawberries. i still haven't done up the fake ice cream with jello. but

i think when you " need " it, you can come up with lots of substitutes. this

The day before I made the same thing without almonds but with cut up

strawberries ;-) My diabetic educator told me to eat 10 tree nuts a day.

Usually I count out 10 cashews, but I have every kind in the freezer. Today I

saw chocolate and caramel bottled flavorings at the co-op. Folks on low carb

lists use those. Might be interesting to experiment.
