Gillian: I thought your questions were great. I think it's very important for

everyone to remember that no matter how highly skilled a therapist comes, you

need to feel comfortable with that person. Remember to shop around, set up

several meetings (with different therapists, letting them know you are shopping

around for " fit " ) and that you are the consumer. Your comfort is

critical!!=====================

Thanks, Liz!

Do you have any ideas of questions to ask that we can add to the list? You would

probably have a better perspective than I since you are apsychologist.

Thanks!

Hi Anne,

This is a great question. I worked with a therapist for a number ofyearsthat was

an ED specialist, but she didn't use or know aboutintuitiveeating. We did a lot

of good work together, but never made anyprogresson overcoming my emotional

overeating, which was why I went inthe firstplace.

Off the top of my head, here are some questions I would ask (and thisisassuming

you want to work on binge eating disorder, as opposed tobulemiaor anorexia):

1. What is your philosophy about overcoming disordered eating?

2. Do you know about intuitive eating or the non-diet approach? Whatdoyou think

about it?

3. What books do you recommend to your patients? (this can tell alotabout what

approach they use)

4. Why do you believe diets don't work?

I can't think of anything else at the moment, it's getting late. :-)Iwill email

you separately the list I have of IE professionals. Somearedieticians, some are

coaches, and some are therapists. If I can helpyouin any other way, please let

me know. The non-diet movement isgrowing, but as you know, it's not big enough

yet so I think you are smartto doyour research before hiring someone.

Thanks!

Hi Gillian,

I think you offered this help to someone else, and I was going toemail

you privately but thought the board could benefit. I am looking fora

therapist, and have had a couple recommendations from a trusted IE

source who as luck would have it are not covered by my insurance. SoI

do have several to choose from that are indeed covered (mostly) bymy

insurance who list eating disorders (etc.) as a specialty. Are there

any questions I can ask to make sure it is a good fit with intuitive

eating principles?

Thanks,

Anne
